So Rodrigues is an interesting case. His qualifying offer has to be higher than the last year of his previous contract. So he can't sign for $1m unless he walks to UFA.

That could be the plan. Dubas is probs saying to his agent we arent going to QO him but if he wants to stay let him become a UFA and lets make a deal.

No his QO would be the same as last year’s salary. But leafs can sign him to anything above league min before that.

He doesn’t have to go to FA. Leafs can sign him for whatever he wants before the QO. Which is why the rid ham is negotiating with him right now.

A season or 2 ago Detroit said the same thing about Frk no and after the season ended he signed with LA.

Then they probably shouldn't have posted this in a forum where people can make comments. Maybe stop trying to give a rebuild team players that we have no use for and learn hockey instead of living in 1967.

Leafs socially distancing themselves from the cup since 1967, good strategy

He's still right on this one. Detroit is pretty much set next year on defense. They could add a top pair LHD, but Dermott is not that and never will be. They definitely don't need more 2nd/3rd pair guys no matter what handed they play as Detroit has McIsaac and Cholowski that will be their 2nd and 3rd pair LHD shortly. Another, Albert Johansson last year's 2nd rounder just signed his pro contract. If Dermott re-ups for more than 3 years it becomes a glut of 2nd/3rd pair guys...and that doesn't even get into their recent RHD drafted in the 1st or 2nd round.

Again Detroit wants to add prospects or picks...not guys coming off their ELC's that look like career 3rd pair NHL d-men.

Think you’re in the same category as the guyvyou’re trying to defend. Detroit is set on D? No I don’t think so. The trade is a good price for a Dman with plenty of potential.

It's a bad organizational fit...and why you don't know what you're talking about.

Next year: Hronek 1st pair RHD d-man age 22. cap space for a free agent LHD (Torey Krug who is from the area along with his wife and both their families would be my bet--since the cap will prevent Boston from re-signing him) or perhaps they just go with DeKeyser which makes the 2nd pair Mortiz Seider (#6 overall) and Patrik Nemeth. 3rd pair: Dennis Cholowski (1st rounder in 2016) and Gustav Lindström (2nd rounder in 2017), And 6/7 guy Alex Biega.

Dermott might block Dennis Cholowski this year but the difference between the two is not worth a top 65 pick--especially on a team destined to finish in the bottom 10. Then he has to block McIsaac and Cholowski the next year....so again plenty of potential on Detroit's defense already without having to trade a valuable pick.

Dekeyser and Nemeth? Oh yeah totally set lol. Lots of great young Dmen though. Adding to that at a low cost wouldn’t hurt.

Yes. In the 20-21 season the Wings are set with d-men. DeKeyser is 30 and Nemeth is 28. They are more than serviceable 2nd and 3rd pair LHD d-men--if they need to play the 1st and 2nd pair they can. DeKeyser and Nemeth would both be ahead of Dermott on any team. Well maybe not the Leafs whose defensemen aren't expected to play actual defense especially against an offensive juggernaut like Columbus (28th rated scoring offense in the regular season in case you were wondering. 27th on the power play)...but I guess any real team that actually has won a Cup in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 10's, or now 20's.

It's not really that hard of a concept to understand....you might not like it...but Detroit doesn't need a low cost 3rd pair d-man with 2nd pair potential that costs them a draft pick. They can afford to get a guy with 1st/2nd pair potential in free agency and have plenty of money left over for years to come.

So, I'll try again: it would be easier and better long-term for Detroit to acquire an UFA d-man (that can slide up to the 1st pair or play on the 2nd pair) when only a few other teams can afford to spend any kind of cap money than to trade a high 3rd rounder. They can even bundle that 3rd round pick with their #57 pick and move up and get an even younger d-man with more potential than Dermott if you need to think of it that way. Or they can even accept another team's cap dump of a LHD and use the pick to get even better on defense in the long term. Again it comes down to that rebuilding team wants to acquire prospects and draft picks not trade them away concept.
