Description
As a general surprise the Habs defeated the Pens in the tournament before losing in 6 to Philadelphia, but they the games were close. With that experience the Habs might be ready to take the next step in their retool, but before that they have some questions marks. Their 1st line for much of the season (Tatar, Danault, Gallagher) all become UFA at the end of next season and will ask for important raises. Petry who was the best all around defenseman also becomes a ufa next season. So who stays, who goes?
First of from the three mentionned above Tatar is most likely the one who goes. His value has Fallen a little bit but dues to his performance in the series, but I think he can still get a decent value. To me that decent value would be to Colorado. He could be a good Partner on their second line with Kadri and Burakovsky. In exchange Habs gets their 1st round selection. Avs could probably add a little more, but the main exchange will revolve around these two.
Then to me Domi is likely done in Montréal. KK and Suzuki pass him in the depth chart, Danault in the perfect 3th line shutdown forward and Domi isn't suit to be a 4th liner. They could look for a team who need a 2nd line center. The target would be Winnipeg. We saw what happened when Scheifele went down and how much they lack depth at middle. The Jets are contenders and could be agressive for a 2nd line center. I would then trade them Domi, plus the first round in the Colorado exchange (around 25th overall) for their 1st round selection (1oth overall). The Habs also have good defenseman, but the best offensive option they got is Petry who's 33 and will become ufa. The Habs could target a offensive defenseman and preferably who plays on the leftside. My choices would be Gostisbehere or Leddy. Both of them fall in their respective depth chart, wouldn't cost that much to acquire and need a change of scenary. My choice would be Ghost because he's younger and his caphit is lower. A 2nd round selection should be enough and I would also add Mete, because with Ghost, Chiarot and Romanov ahead of him he would be a healthy scratch on most nights. Then the Habs also need a backup to relieve Price somethimes. There's plenty of choices so I won't bother trying to find the perfect one, as long as they sign one good backup. I also think they like the Kovalchuk experience and could be interested in bringing him back again. I think they could get him at Something +/-2M for one year is reasonable. Finally one last trade they could make would be to get Puljujarvi from Edmonton. A big power forward, but it just didn't work out in Edmonton. On a previous agm they told me a second round would be enough to get him. So Mtl exchange one they could to get him.
Then it's time the Habs start spending many people would like them bringing the big fish in Hall, but I think he's not really interested in playing here so I would go with Hoffman. A proven scorer who's on his way out of Florida. He could be costly, but Habs have to money to pay him and he fill a big need which is to score.
One other thing would be to let some capspace for next season and not be to close to the salary cap, because if they want to resign Petry, Danault and Gallagher they will all ask for a raise (Petry not that much) and also KK, Lekhonen will ask for more.

Would colorado protect Tatar in expansion, I’m not up on Colorado’s situation, if not protected they maybe limited on what’s offered for what may turn into a rental

With everyone expecting a shortened 2020-21 season (60 games?), most teams will likely go with 3 even lines and a fourth that does spot duty. As such, Danault would still be getting 14 minutes+ at even strength and 70% of the PK duties, which should be about another 5. He won't be hurting for ice time.

I'm not sure what you imagine you'll get for the rights to Puljujarvi, but a solid 2nd is what he's worth on the open market. You might prefer a player -- Byron, Juulsen, Brook -- but you're dreaming in technicolor if you think the league's GMs are frothing to sign a player who has put up 37 points in 139 games with one of the most explosive offences in the NHL. The league sees him as a reclamation project.

The game would be: They will make him a promesses of a contract... but won't sign him as UFA player with no contract doesn't need to be protected.
Another little play that GM's would take benefit

It's a fair value and a modest cap savings for Philly, but here's a question: if Ghost is a healthy scratch in Philly, is he going to be better than Kulak, Mete or (trumpets sound!!) Romanov?

why would EDM turn down a 2nd RD pick for a guy who went 53GP 17-20-37 in the AHL, and 139GP 17-20-37 in the NHL. Not exactly dominant numbers, and I doubt EDM is going to let him rot away without trying to recuperate something for his value.

If I tell you that you "must" trade him, what do you think is fair value?

Fair enough ya probably at his age, sign to a contender after a strong season in Colorado. Good secondary scoring and shot at a cup over dough and stay put

If you're trading Domi, he's worth more than a 15-spot bump up in the first round that barely lands you in the top 10. I would target a bigger deal with NJ that moves Domi and (a D prospect not named Romanov) and the #16 pick, for the Devils' #7 and #18. At #7, there's a decent chance of getting Rossi and, failing that, Lundell will certainly still be there.

ghost is not a top pairing LD on the habs after being a scratch in the playoffs. we have Chiarot and Petry...... i get the pp, but really Ghost serves no purpose on this team. he was interesting last year when Petry was looking shakier and Chiarot was a question mark. Habs need to trade for a quality right shot, i like a move for Dumba

First and prospect was the reported ask from holland No reason to bend on that. Reality is very little interest in moving him going to be a cost controlled winger that has a huge ceiling. His past nhl struggles are easy enough to explain by poor usage and injuries. Not going to accept significant loss on him without really seeing what he’s capable of. The drama and mess was between his agent and charelli far more than anything it’s very different situation for everyone involved now.

You won't get a 1st AND a prospect for him. He hasn't done anything to warrant that return. You have a valid argument to ask for a 1st for a guy with a ceiling like his, but a 1st AND a prospect is ridiculous.

It would be nice to revisit this when they deal is made to see what the value really is.

Not likely. Avs protection list, forwards MacK, Rantanen, Landeskog, Kadri, Burakovsky (all locks), then 2 of Compher, Nichushkin, Jost (all RFA’s under 25). D list Makar, Girard, Johnson (NMC) though it’s been speculated they might ask Johnson to waive to protect Graves, goalie Grubauer.

Asking price clearly shows that the team has very little interest in moving him.... one of those overpayments or can’t have situation. Oilers are certainly right to do so. Remember the Drouin situation took place everyone said he was worthless because of it but Tampa came out of that rather well.
