Goalie Bidding War

Created by: Arom5477
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2020
Published: Aug. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here's how I see it:

If a goalie bidding war starts for PIT's young goaltenders, you have to explore the possibility of trading both and recoup a lot of assets.

This is especially the case if Murray starts getting 1st round pick value because of said bidding war. And if Murray fetches a 1st round pick, Jarry will undoubtedly get a 1st-plus.

Then, go UFA route for a goalie.

What's stopping the other teams to go the UFA route instead of forking over a 1st + for Pittsburgh goalies

there is going to be the opposite of a goalie bidding war this offseason, there is a glut of goalies on the market, its a saturated position so teams will have their pick of the litter to makea goalie move if the want to.

Is Jack Eichel part of the deal as well?

I heard Hörnqvist and Jack Johnson for 8OA and Eichel (50% retainend salary)

or holtby or markstrom, or could pick up short term fillers in Talbot or Griess as a 1B starter.

Oilers easily pass. Not including a first or jp in any goalie trade. The ufa route is too rich with options. Unfortunate timing for Pitts to shop goalies.

And if all of them are signed I’d rather trade like a 7th for 1 year of Dubnyk and see if he bounces back rather than trade a 1st for either Murray or Jarry. They’re too risky to give a lot to

AND teams looking to shed goalies. I bet STL wouldn't mind shedding Jake's cap hit to sign AP. AZ trading away Raanta because they're somehow against the cap for a team that doesn't make money even PRE-COVID.

yup, goalie market is going to be the most flooded it has been in quite a few years as teams are transitioning into their younger starters. Rangers are going to buy out hank probably, add another one to the list

You also could have teams like the Avs could even explore the goalie market if they have lost faith in Grubauers inability to stay healthy during the playoffs.

Pens have to trade Murray, teams dont have to pony up to get a goalie. With how GMJR handled the Kapanen trade, Murray is going to be get dumped for next to nothing especially since hes asking 6m aav at a min. What team is going to dump assets into Murray when they can take a run at Lehner as a UFA for 6m, who is looking for a logn term deal around 6 years.

I don't think you've thought this through very well. If Pittsburgh can sell off a goalie or two and effectively replace them with a UFA, that means every other team can also go the UFA route to grab an effective NHL goalie rather than giving a pile of assets to Pittsburgh.

Take your Edmonton trade for instance: they could use that pick on Askarov, who has a far higher ceiling than Jarry, and pick up a UFA to backup Koskinen - say, Thomas Greiss. Just like that Edmonton has similar goaltending (with more experience) than your proposal and much better goaltending in the future. And they didn't give up Puljujarvi, who has the potential to be the best player in the deal, and Benning who is a very effective RHD.

Result: Edmonton is better on the short term, better in the medium term and better in the long term.

not much, but maybe cap space? Lehner is gunna go for like 6 mill a season but murray and jarry could be half of that

teams might trade a really late first for Jarry but i'd be surprised. Goalie Markets are weird AF tho

Would you rather deal with a bidding war via trade for young, relatively cost controlled assets (i.e. Jarry likely nets $2.667 AAV) OR a bidding war via UFA? We all know what happens when a bidding war starts in free agency. You sign deals comparable to Lucic, Neal, Eriksson, and Bobrovsky...

I think you're missing the point though. There will be no bidding war. It's one of the worst goalie markets in the history of the NHL. Lots of goalies out there...Lots of teams trying to trade away goalies...Not a lot of teams looking to acquire goalies....Flat Cap environment.

Or murray is coming off a god awful year and will just be a young version of a bad UFA signing bc he is asking for way to much money

Hornqvist for Turris

Why would the Penenguins do that? Hornqvist is the better player, lower cap hit, lower salary and one year less. Literally no positive for the Penguinss in this trade.
