1.
PIT
    Patric Hornqvist
    Nick Spaling

    Grade: B+

At the time seemed like a win for Nashville but Hornqvist played a key role for the Pens in the b2b cup wins and has posted 106 goals and 216 points in 363 games played.

      James Neal
      2.
      PIT
        David Perron

        Grade: D

Perron was not a terrible player but this was a massive price to pay for a player who just did not click on the Pens roster. Although, he has really found his game since then and seems to be doing great in St Louis. Unfortunately, this wasn't the production the Penguins got and that 2015 1st ended up being an elite center
        EDM
          Rob Klinkhammer
2015 1st round pick (Mathew Barzal)
          3.
          PIT
            Ben Lovejoy

            Grade: B

At the time I remember being mad at this trade because Despres seemed promising. It turned out that Lovejoy was a great addition to the Pens roster and he ended up having much better seasons than Despres
            ANA
              Simon Despres
              4.
              PIT
                Ian Cole

                Grade: A

This was pretty much a massive upgrade at D for the Pens. Cole played a large role in the cup wins and although he had issues with head coach Mike Sullivan, his play should have earned him a contract as we badly miss him now.

                    Tyler Biggs
                    2016 cond. 2nd

                    Grade: A+

His best trade. Kessel become a glue to the Pens HBK line. His powerplay work alone was worth this package. Phil Kessel is a 2 time Stanley Cup champion

                      Kasperi Kapanen

                        Nick Bonino
                        Adam Clendening
                        2016 2nd

                        Grade: A

Jim kept on rolling. Got the better player back in Nick Bonino who was the best 3C the Pens have had since Jordan Staal. His PK work was phenominal and he was a stud in both cup wins.
                        VAN
                          Brandon Sutter

                          PIT
                            Trevor Daley

                            Grade: A+

Rob Scuderi's prime years were way behind and the fact that Chicago agreed to this still baffles me. Daley was a good puck moving D who helped the Pens tremendously.

                              Rob Scuderi

                                Carl Hagelin

                                Grade: B

This trade gets a B because David Perron still cost us a lot. But Hagelin was well worth it. He was the final piece to the HBK line. His speed and PK work was amazing to watch

                                    Grade: A+

Jim found a gem here. Underappreciated in Edmonton, Schultz became a great offensive d man who helped fill in for Letang. This was a dark time for Edmonton as they also moved Jeff Petry

                                        Ron Hainsey

                                        Grade: B

A slight overpayment by the Pens but a much needed boost to the blue line. Hainsey played his heart out and won a Cup.

                                            Grade: D

I understand why this trade was made but the price was pretty heavy to pretty much gift Vegas a starter (who made the finals in Year 1)

                                                Grade: F

A terrible trade. The Pens had no need for Reaves and even though the drop in picks wasn't that large, it still cost the pens a decent 3C and Klim Kostin for this failed experiment

                                                    Grade: A

                                                    A great trade for a decent 3rd pairing D.

                                                        Grade: C

The trade wasn't bad on paper. But Brassard didn't fit his 3C role, the Pens got swept and this ended in a pretty big failure by the Pens who move 1st round picks like its nothing

This trade only happened because GMJR overpaid for Hunwick in FA

I'm not going to be to harsh about the Kapanen trade yet but it do feel like its an over-payment, but I've been wrong about some of his trades before. I was critical of the Perron and Hagelin trade and I was woefully wrong about that one.

The others fleeced us on realistically couldn’t have asked for a better return in either case. Shultz was well past the point of no return in Edmonton it just got too bad he wasn’t going to rebound without a new home. Considering his play at the time very lucky return for oilers.
Marino is what it is tough situation and I honestly didn’t think he’d ever become the guy he already is think that one kinda took everyone by surprise.

He acquired Muzzin without giving up a roster player, so far has a good eye for drafting talent (i.e. some of his KHL signings), locked up the core 4 when people said it couldn't be done. Managed to ditch the abhorrent Marleau contract for a 13OA pick only to recoup a 15OA later for a 3rd line winger, also managed to get out of 5 more years of Zaitsev. He even gave up sparks for clarkson and a pick, allowing him to use LTIR and sign Marner, which was smart. He also bought a pick by retaining on Lehner's contract. And, feasibility aside, he landed the biggest free agent signing maybe ever, in Tavares, who's been one of our most consistent players and is currently our Captain. Little known fact, he was also responsible for the Hyman for Greg McKegg trade with florida, which has paid dividends for us as well.

The Kadri trade was a huge whiff, but at the time it made sense. Leafs give up an emotional 2C, who kept getting suspended and who wasn't playing great in his new 3C role, for a 60 point defenceman and a decent centre back. Now, Barrie absolutely sucked, and was not the type of guy we needed. But, he did get depth guy Rosen back for Hutch, after making a great trade for Clifford and Campbell.

I think this offseason is his big test, if the team sucks next year it's all on him. He paid the big guys, def overpayed in a couple cases. But better them than 4th liners.

Also, Edmonton needs to stop trading with Pittsburgh.
