Why would you give up a 2nd when you can just sign a better center in free agency for cheaper. Kerfoot cant win a draw and is Left shot. He is like 40% and Chaisson out scored him as well.

You can field a roster of +6 million but your performance bonuses (for guys like Robertson and potentially Spezza) get added onto next years cap and you can't accumulate cap space throughout the year making it extremely difficult to make moves during the season if you're using all six million of that space, which the leafs would do.

The reason the Leafs did it last year is that they already had Horton's contract so they were going to be using LTIR whether they wanted to or not. And since that accumulating and performance bonus stuff gets slapped on you whether you are using 1 cent or 10 million dollars, you might as well get as many LTIR contracts as you can to use it. Hence, they acquired Clarkson.

Now they don't have any LTIR contracts, so it doesn't really make sense to acquire another one.
