if im MTL i keep Danault, and if i had to move him to SJS, i dont see a piece theyd need in return (of relative fair value)

Montreal wants to keep him, however Danault has openly said he doesn't want to be 3C with 1 year left before UFA. So if Montreal doesn't want to lose a Selke Candidate for nothing, they have to trade him.

Yeah that makes some sense. We're not stacked on assets that are the most appealing in terms of raw value.

That could definitely be arranged, although we honestly have very little use for Mete. Hertl gonna cost quite a bit if I'm honest. We're probably not gonna be willing to give him up.

IDK if the Sharks would work as a destination for Phil. If we move him we’d want quality over quantity, and I’m not sure that anyone in the Sharks fits the bill in terms of what both teams would be willing to create a deal around.

Yeah I totally understand that viewpoint. Do you think Danault's destination at the beginning of the year is contingent on the Habs trading Domi? Because I know they have Suzuki and Kotkaniemi down the middle as well and they could bot contend for top-6 roster spots. Would that presumably push Danault down the lineup?

Yeah it's tough because we could really use someone like him because I think he's a good 2C at an affordable cap hit, but I'm not sure what Montreal could use from us. People have mentioned Kane as being the type of player Montreal might be interested in, but there are upsides and downsides to trying to include him in a trade.

yeah, its no slight on SJS, theres just not a piece that stands out immediately as something MTL needs

Oh yeah I totally get that. If Montreal was low on picks this year I'd be willing to give up picks and roster players/prospects, but they literally have 14 damn picks this year so that's a no go lol

Sounds like Domi is as good as gone. Kotkaniemi and Suzuki are expected to be the top6 Center not just for next year, but for the future as well. So even if Bergevin wants Danault to stick around to make sure the kids can handle that role next year, Danault can see the writing on the wall and knows his time as a top6 Center in Montreal is coming to an end. If I had to guess, he will be traded or lost for nothing. I don't see Danault being with Montreal past his contract.
