Crazy Trades

Created by: CD282
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2020
Published: Sep. 2, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap space is going to be in very short supply this off season, and some of the teams with cap space will have internal budgets that will keep their spending well short of the $81.5M upper limit. This will result in some players - especially the marquee free agents - signing for less money and term than we would otherwise expect. Because the cap will be kept artificially flat for the next 2-3 years, I wouldn't be surprised if these players took lower dollar short-term deals to play on contending teams and then look to cash in on those results when the cap rises significantly. That's the premise of this AGM.

The trades are meant to be semi-realistic, just-for-fun moves. Don't get your knickers in a knot if a pick has to be added this way or retention that way.

The Athanasiou signing is a little low, but more in line with the season he just had. I chose $1.9M because that was all I had left! I could've traded him and then promoted Benson, but chose to go this route instead.

Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Neal, James ($1,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
NJ is desperate for a sniper and can't attract any decent UFA's. At $4M per season, James Neal is worth taking a swing at.
2.
EDM
  1. 2020 5th round pick (TBL)
OTT
  1. Russell, Kris
Additional Details:
Ottawa gives up the most shots in the league, Kris Russell blocks the most shots in the league. Well, top-3 in the past 3 years... his salary is just $1.5M next season too, which is attractive to Melnyk.
3.
EDM
  1. 2020 4th round pick (ANA)
MTL
  1. Chiasson, Alex
Additional Details:
The usual cap dump. Decent bottom sixer and net-front PP guy.
4.
WPG
  1. Nurse, Darnell
Additional Details:
WPG strengthens their top-4 by cashing in a winger. Nurse was 5th in the league in controlled entries last year, 5th in controlled entries with scoring chance afterwards and 5th in controlled zones exits. Over the past 3 years he is 7th in 5v5 points, tied with Victor Hedman. He doesn't suck.
5.
EDM
  1. Dewar, Connor
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (MIN)
MIN
  1. Kassian, Zack
Additional Details:
Kassian is 77th in the league in 5v5 goals scored over the past 2 years, tied with Malkin, Barzal, Giroux, Dadonov, Forsberg, Landeskog, Bergeron and JT Miller. He also adds size and physicality, although he's somewhat inconsistent in that regard. An imperfect player but he has size, speed and skill and is an absolute load when he's on his game. Easily a top-6 player on just about any team when he's playing well, a great coaching staff might be able to get that out of him more often. He isn't getting paid like a top-6 guy either, his $3.2M is 195th in the league among forwards, putting him in the 3rd line range. Decent value for a player who can play 1st line when he's ON and play 3rd line when he's not.
6.
EDM
  1. Jones, Max
  2. 2020 4th round pick (NSH)
ANA
  1. Benning, Matthew [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Does this need an explanation? Benning is a good player and I like him, he just doesn't have a roster spot anymore with Bouchard pushing from the AHL.

Nurse doesn’t suck but he isn’t worth Ehlers + doesn’t have a nice contract considering he’ll want another huge raise after is 2 years

Nj isn’t desperate for a sniper. They need a sniper but their not winning anytime soon. If I’m trading McLeod to Edmonton it’s gonna be based around Pulijarvi.
Why would NJ give up an asset and take Neal, when they can take a similar or worse contract and take in a really good asset along with it? You’re not getting anything for Neal.

However, if they moved a couple wings in other trades, I would sign off on this deal before the ink dried!

Where would you play him? Down the right side you have Fiala, Zucc, Kunin and Hartman. Hartman is a 4th liner and cheaper, so not worth swapping them. You can argue Kassian is currently better than Kunin, but Kunin is still developing, younger, and can play center in a pinch. Given their lack of center depth, moving Kunin to bring in Kassian is short sighted. Zucc isn't going anywhere and Fiala is obviously not going anywhere. There's no logical place to play Kassian.

You could try him on the left side, but again, Parise, Kaprizov, Greenway, Foligno, and Donato are your options to move there. Donato is probably gone this offseason since Guerin admitted he deserved better and there just isn't a spot for him. Parise isn't going anywhere, Kaprizov will get a shot in the top 6 so do you trade Foligno or Greenway to play Kassian on his offside? Seems silly to me.

I like truculence...a lot...especially when it creates balance to a line, or a team.
You make great points, as always...and it’s clear adding Kassian to the lineup is challenging. In my defense, i did say, “ if they moved a couple wings...”. This is definitely the challenging part. The obvious one, as you mentioned, is Donato. Greenway is a player i would absolutely move...but only for a return worthy of his potential (another challenging endeavor). And of course there are Zuccarello and Parise... trading either or both is almost impossible, but I would trade both, even if it meant a step backwards next year to make giant leaps in a year or two. I know, I know...almost zero chance...

Anyway, I desperately want a Jake Virtanen, a Josh Anderson, a Zach Kassian type player or two in the lineup every night to create balance, protect the skilled guys, and to forecheck the crap out of opposing defensemen.

Who are some left-shot Foligno types I should add to my list?

What needs to be added to the Jets trade, realistically?

I think the 1st would be a non-starter for Holland, but he could well include JP or another player in the deal. Would the Jets be interested in Matt Benning do you think?

you rave about Kassian being tied with elite players like Malkin, Barzal etc 5v5 but look who he plays with. Kassian, Chaisson, Maroon all had success with McDavid but that does not make them comparable to the likes of Malkin and Barzal. Kassian is overpaid and has too much term. Holland made a blunder with that signing.....as I am sure you agree since you are trying to move him

Just pointing out the facts. People on here seem to think Kassian sucks and is useless and a cap dump, dude is being paid like a 3rd line forward and is far outperforming many elite players when it comes to goal scoring. Sure he plays with McDavid, but he still puts the puck in the net at very high rates in this league. I don't think his contract is too much, it may be a year too long but that's a normal trade-off when paying a guy less than he's producing.

I never once said Kassian was comparable to Malkin or Barzal.

As for trying to move him - cap space is tight and he's not as good as either Ehlers or Yamamoto, and Puljujarvi is showing promise in Finland right now and probably would produce as much as Kassian for 1/3 the cost. There simply isn't any reason to keep Kassian if I can add Hall, Ehlers and Puljujarvi to the top-9.
