Filling In The Pieces

Created by: Bbpagewolf
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 2, 2020
Published: Sep. 2, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Rangers have an opportunity to create a pretty complete team. Here’s why I can see these moves happening:

Retirement: Henrik Lundqvist

Trades:
Blockbuster trade with the Coyotes- I don’t see Taylor Hall returning to Arizona even though they’re currently trying to make it work and I can see them trading Antti Raanta as well. As a result, they will be rebuilding again and offloading cap. This is a fair trade for both sides IMO. The Rangers get a legitimate LD and a center with untapped 2nd line potential both on team friendly deals, and the Coyotes get a young goalie with starter potential, a really good prospect center who could reach top 6-top 9 potential if he works out under a change of scenery, two young LD’s who could fill out their roster within the next couple years, and a 1st round pick for 2021 which they need since they forfeited their own (I assume they can still trade for one and if not, someone please correct me on that).

Ryan Strome Trade- The Blackhawks could use a guy who can play both center and RW and putting him in a situation where he can play with his brother would be good and reassuring for both players. Ryan Strome was on pace for almost 70 points before COVID-19 hit and shortened the regular season, but whether it was because of playing with Artemi Panarin or not remains to be seen. As for the Rangers, they get a good backup goaltender who can push Igor Shesterkin and be signed as an RFA for cheap as well as a really good prospect center who’s dominated the collegiate level for Penn State.

Brett Howden trade- Maybe this one’s a bit of a stretch and this probably is an overpayment on the Canadiens part this making this one pretty unlikely, but at this point he won’t get a fair shot with the Rangers as they will never be able to give him the proper ice time he needs for him to be successful. The Habs can give him that in the next year or two whether it’s as a center or a LW. If Brett Howden peaks, he’s a good middle six forward who can eventually fill the void that Phillip Danault will leave behind when he inevitably leaves Montreal either through a trade this offseason/trade deadline, or as a UFA next year. Again, it may not be a 2nd and a 3rd coming back, but I’m sure a trade like this will involve some hard balling from both sides until they settle on something fair.

UFA signings:
Nick Ebert, Vinni Lettieri, and Reece Scarlett- AHL depth signings and re-signings.

Tomas Nosek- A legitimate 4th liner with talent and the intangibles needed to succeed in the playoffs. He can play both center and LW, he wins the majority of the faceoffs he takes when he takes them, and a cheap option under a flat cap. I can see him working very well with Brendan Lemieux and whoever the 4th line RW will be, but it probably won’t be Jesper Fast at this point.

Even though the trade favors Chicago, we don't have the cap space to sign Ryan Strome; and besides, we already have the better Strome version in Dylan smile

We could start a brother collection based off that trade, it’ll be like a big monopoly game. I’m sure everything will work out.

Arizona have goalies, chychrun is worth more than this entire package, and dvorak is already a 2C and arizonas 1C

I like Howden more than most, I think. I'd probably take this trade at the draft table.

We already have Ryan Poehling, who fits everything you said when describing Howden.

The arizona deal just doesn't fit. I see arizona selling the older d cheap but not chychrun and they already have too many goalies.

Or you know... MTL keeps the picks and gives that ice time to Poehling.

But Poehling is an upgrade on Weal, but we still have Thompson and Cousins to replace. Howden could be good for that. Weal needs to go.

We’re not giving up a 2nd and a 3rd to replace our 4th liners. If we sign Kovalchuk or another UFA top 9 forward, our lines will look like this:

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Drouin - Suzuki - Armia
Domi - Kotkaniemi - Kovalchuk
Lehkonen - Evans - Byron

And for the 2 healthy scratches we can just use Belzile, and/or sign a player or 2 (ie. Thompson).

Given both the Habs' playoffs success and Kovalchuk's lack thereof, I doubt the Habs will dig deep to sign him. That window has likely closed.

I would be pleasantly surprised to see Domi back in a Habs jersey, but I have my doubts. Too many other priorities, so unless the Habs are willing to give up on Drouin and play Domi at the #1 LW, he won't want to sign and the Habs will find him a good home where he can play centre.

Well if we trade Domi he can just be replaced in the lineup by whoever we get back. As for Kovy, it may not have worked in Washington, but I don’t see why we can’t at least give him a chance on a low $ contract, like Tomas Plekanec.

Here's the question: is Kovalchuk going to want to deal with all the bubble B.S. for another year to earn $1M? With the collapse of the cap, I think the idea that he'll earn $3M is a pipe dream.

Another question: There's a very good chance that the AHL doesn't start next season and that the NHL rosters will instead be 28 or 30 players, playing a very compressed schedule. There is a very good chance that this is where the top prospects will need develop, so clogging up the roster with Kovalchuk might be a luxury if it means someone like Ylonen doesn't get playing time.

They can’t do a bubble for next season. Montreal might only play games in Canada, but he’ll be able to be with his family like a normal season.

And I very much doubt the NHL starts without the AHL. If it did, then the prospects that aren’t NHL ready (specifically Europeans like Ylönen) can be loaned to leagues in Europe.
