Washington offseason

Created by: eddyed24
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 28, 2020
Published: Sep. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There will be a change of guard for the Caps. Long time goaltender Holtby will leave to become a ufa and it's gonna be Samsonov's time to shine. They also made a change behind the Bench after Rierden wasn't transported the team past the first round of the playoffs in two consecutive season. However they still have the same core that won them the Cup in 2018 and they Don't have much money to manuver, so I Don't expect much change in Washington besides the two mentionned above
They'll certainly add a backup goaltender and maybe a depth player but that's it.

I think the Caps will try to add some scoring in the bottom six, and sign a defenseman that's a bit more mobile than Dillon. I think DeMelo is a good option, since Orlov is just not great playing on the right side. I think Kempny and Panik are probably being dangled out there for a trade to free up more space for a scorer.

Yeah, they need to do more/different than above in my opinion BUT that depends on if they can move a contract or two. Otherwise, above could be a reality and I would not be very excited with this. They really need to get those D pairs right because trading Nisky messed that balance up. They need someone on the 3rd line to score and on left wing wouldn't mind if Panik/Hags were flipped. Hags is better on the 4th line imho.

100% agree there. Hagelin on the fourth line makes a lot of sense, and he can be the PK forward ace. The third line definitely needs more offense. To me, the biggest thing this team is missing compared to the 2018 team is the lack of depth scoring. When you have Burakovsky, Eller, and Connolly on your third line, they're gonna pot some goals.

Yep. They're down a Niskanen scoring from the point and a Burakovsky scoring from the third line. Could the answers be Fehervary and McMichael? Maybe. But could they just as easily be Shattenkirk and Namestnikov? Maybe if Dillon had signed at 3.3M. Or maybe if they can find a trade that moves Panik for cap space.

The other thing they were missing, big-time, against the Isles, was Nick Backstrom. If the plan is just to play against a team that doesn't hit dirty and try to injure guys, it's not a great plan for NHL hockey. Could Namestnikov play a 2C role in a pinch? Maybe. Could Eller? Kinda. Could Tierney? More so. Could Dvorak? Pretty much. But if Vegas really wants to cut salary, what are the odds of William Karlsson?
