What would it take to win now

Created by: jnowariak

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 4, 2020

Description
Assuming the goal of this offseason is to contend next year, LOTS has to happen with players that wont come cheap and that'll put us in a very tight cap situation over the next few years. I also think all of the pieces we need will cost more than this. Murray is probably the best goalie available we can afford. Domi and Mete are a best case return on Brodin. Cirelli costs a lot. Period. Is our lineup better? Yes. But I don't look at this team and see a contender. We are going to have to wait to win.

Absolutely, positively not. MIN needs to rebuild; their window has passed with the current core. The only aging guy who'd still contribute in a future Cup run is Spurgeon.

That MTL trade is too risky for MIN, as Domi is coming off a down year and Mete is still a huge unknown.

That's far, far too much for Cirelli, especially considering that his value is lower than it normally should be due to Tampa's desperate cap situation. Cirelli is not someone to build your team around, either; as it stands, he's best used as a 2C.

The Murray trade is good on paper as long as we move Dubnyk. I'd rather we retain and trade him to a team who loses out in this year's goalie UFA market, but if we get desperate, I can see your scenario happening.

Staal will never recapture his magic from 2017-18, but he's still a capable 2C and could fetch significantly more than that at the trade deadline.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read the description. I can see we had the same idea!

And that is why I made this. We aren't getting players to contend this year, the cost is just too high. I really think Cirelli would take something along those lines and Murray is super overvalued. I don't mind the Brodin trade IF he won't resign (which I have to assume Guerin is trying to figure out). I've seen all of these trades in isolation and I don't think any of them are worth it.

I agree 100%. I just got tired of seeing people saying we should trade/OS Cirelli and trade for Murray as though we could compete in the next 2 to 3 years. I really hate the Brodin trade ideas because I think the only way we move him is if he doesn't want to resign and I think he wants to resign.

Hate the idea of Domi for Brodin, I think Domi is fools gold based on the 20ish games I watched over the pandemic scouting him. He's skilled, but his decision making is really poor and he turns the puck over a ton.

That is... A lot for Cirelli. I like him, I like him a lot actually and he is my favorite option to solve our center woes, but I think it comes down to either moving the #9 pick for him or Eriksson Ek (who I think we should keep even if we also had Cirelli) with an add. If it's Ek and the 9th pick then I'd hope we'd be getting something else nice along with Cirelli (or maybe we get another team involved).

Murray hasn't been great the past few years, I wouldn't pay much more than a 4th for him. I'd much rather sign one of the many free agent goalies like Holtby who could be looking to sign a short prove-it deal.

I’m down on Murray too, I also don’t think there is a goalie on the market we could afford that is contender worthy.

Domi isn’t really a target so much as a way to get value for Brodin if he doesn’t resign. Mete is close to nhl ready and we will need that (LD) with Brodin gone. I think this move makes more sense for MN than a trade for Strome.

And Cirelli. I don’t think he’s a 1C, but he’s one of the few that is close and is available. He isn’t going to come cheap, even with Tampa’s cap trouble. I think Ek and 9OA are the start of the deal, maybe 2 2nds is overkill, but that’s the start.

If we want to win a cup, we need to think that cup comes in 5 years. And that means the holes on the nhl roster stay there for the time being.

Ek is off limits for me...unless he’s part of a deal to land Barkov, or another center at that level.

I'd very hesitantly be willing to give him up for Cirelli if one of our defenseman is a non-starter. My ideal scenario is to somehow use Dumba to get him.

Another stupid idea I've thought of lately is getting involved in the Laine to Carolina rumor. LeBrun proposed the idea of Laine for Pesce and Trocheck and said it's probably not enough but at least gets Chevy thinking. Well my dumb idea is to send Dumba+ or Brodin+ (maybe something like Staal and Beckman?) to Winnipeg, Laine to Carolina, and Necas to the Wild. Probably have to have more pieces involved but that's the base.

Make a roster with that trade - I’d like to see that!

I’d go after Laine for the same i would go after Boeser - with Laine/Boeser, Fiala, Kaprizov, and Boldy as wings, I like anyone’s chances playing in the middle.

I'm afraid of the lashing Canes fans will give me. Last time I tried to trade for Necas they were acting as if he is McDavid

Cirelli has got to be the most overrated player in the world right now.

That’s what happens when he’s the only affordable option on the market, but I wouldn’t sell him short. I think he’s the kid of player that could put a team over the top. Not the key piece, but a very important one. He’s gonna get a great contract for a young guy, some team is going to get 5 to 6 years of solid play at a reasonable price, and Tampa is going to win.

You realize a 7M offer sheet wouldn't cost the price that you're paying to vastly overpay him?
