Rust, Murray, McCann for Reinhart, Montour

Obviously a career year for Rust, but he out scored Reinhart, is more physical and better defensively.

Rutherford also commented on avoiding RFAs with arbitration rights. Both Reinhart and Montour are RFA's with arbitration rights. Resigning them will push the Penguin too far over the cap. With Rust possibly finding a niche and being cost controlled, this all just doesn't work for the Pens as is.

A lot of people keep pooing on Murray's value, but he is a starting goaltender and you are trading for him to make him your starting goalie... and respecting that and giving proper value.

Bottom line though is that in order to sign Reinhart and Montour the Penguins need to shed cap. Most likely, either Hornqvist or Johnson would need to be part of the package to make the cap work moving forward. Hornqvist would impact value on the Pittsburgh side, Johnson would impact on Buffalo side.

Rust, Murray, McCann, Johnson, 3rd
Rust, Murray, Hornqvist, 4th

The value on the trade is fair though I don't think it works for either team. Reinhart is by far the best player in the deal . Rist had an outlier season, but has not come close to producing at Sam's level any year. Also Reinhart is excellent defensively. The trade falls apart because the Sabres cannot afford to let Reinharts offense go for anyone that is not a legit 2C and also I don’t think they have any interest in bringing in a hoalie to compete for the starting job. The Pens just cannot bring in this much additional salary

I think that is the contract that Anderson would want after feeling underpaid on his last contract. Yes he was injured this year and had an off year, but there are not many players in the league like him.
Buffalo is the the type of team that can afford this contract and would be willing to pay it to get the type of player he is. It may seem like overpayment at first, but if you put him on the top line with Eichel he will give you 25 goals and 60 points a year. He also adds the physical part of the game to help protect Eichel. He also has the speed to keep up.

Sure. But it would still be a mistake, and there is no way I could see his agent negotiating that he deserves that much $$. Even if you value him at that price, he hasn't earned that price.

Philly doesn't do that sure they would trade Ghost but retaining and sending a pick for a guy who isn't really an upgrade on the wing and wouldn't be a center on the team makes no sense

Salaries are same for next year and Philly sheds Ghost contract for following two years, that is why they send the pick.

Ghost has a longer contract so they are still keeping more salary in the long term trade doesn't make sense for the flyers as is without retention but that makes it worse. Buffalo gets Ghost at 3.5 for 3 years while Johansson walks after next season getting buffalo off of the cap hit while philly still deals with money from ghost the pick would have to come to Philly to get them to think about it, Sure ghost hasn't been great but they don't need to get rid of him.
