This is a definitely a hard question, but I think the Canucks are going to need to keep Markstrom. They know what they have in him and once Demko is ready-ready (although after watching last nights game he looks ready), they can ship off Markstrom for a nice return.

Keep both.

Protect whichever goalie is better next season. If SEA selects Markstrom, it's no different than letting him walk for nothing as a UFA

Man that’s tough. You guys are cap strapped and Demko played out of this world. I’d probably move on from Markstrom so that you only have to worry about protecting Demko for expansion

I say they keep Demko. He’s young and he’s ready, and Markstrom is already in his 30s.

Markstrom won't sign without a NMC.

In terms of term and $, I'm just not comfortable with having a goalie with a high cap hit (with his season and playoffs I can see 6 mill for 5 at least). Give Demko a reliable veteran back-up, like a former starter, and have him get used to #1 minutes. You can probably sign him for 4 mill over 5 the following year. At the end of these contracts, you'd have a 6+ mill 35 year old goalie or a 4+ mill 30 year old guy

Except that would mean DiPietro would be left available in the expansion draft if he was the backup next season. Although he may be exempt still

If he doesn’t play next year at all he’ll be exempt. I would bring back Dominique as backup on vet min and keep him on exempt list

At some point you have to take the training wheels off right? He just played absolutely lights out. If they had the cap and it wasn’t going into an expansion draft I would say keep both, but they gotta make the tough decision here

If there’s anyway to keep both they do that.... otherwise you’d have to think they go with Demko who’s 5 years younger then Markstrom. Markstrom has been in the NHL for 10 years and has 1 good season.... Demko’s best is still to come.

These are the answers in my opinion.
There’s going to be a condensed schedule next season. Teams are going to need two quality keepers to handle more back to backs.

You trust 3 games of Demko over a season of Markstrom....?

He’s younger. He’s proven he can be a starter in the regular season. Markstrom has been in the league for years and has only had one good season. Marky is 30 and after 30, that’s when a goalie’s production begins to decline. He’ll be worth $6 million this season, but it most likely won’t be with Vancouver. You gotta take into account too that guys like Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes are gonna be due for big extensions for the long term. The future is gonna be wild for the Canucks.
