Taking Zetterberg's contract doesn't help or hurt Detroit. So Detroit isn't paying Toronto to take him. You should take a look at the LTIR FAQ under the CBA tab.

As far as you Wings trade, that is horrible. Zetterberg on LTIR, neither hurts or helps Wings. They have some 35 million in cap, used on 51000 in LTIR cap last year and Zetterbergs real dollar cost to Wings is only 1 million which is covered by insurance. So tell me sir, why Wings trade those picks to take on a 6th defenseman?
