What If Matthews And Marner Got Bridge Deals

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Sep. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I heard that during the time of the negotiation, Matthews was interested in signing anywhere between 3-8 years. This made me wonder that if he had signed a bridge deal, perhaps Marner would have done the same since his camp was making him his only comparable.

While I understand the reason why teams would want to lock up their stars to mid/long term, I also think it’s worth considering what kind of team Toronto could’ve built if they signed on bridge deals. Marner would be making a lot less than he is now (still an overpay) and the team would probably have more cap space to make significant moves that addressed weaknesses on the team.

For example, they could’ve traded Nazem Kadri in a deal to fetch a higher salary but more effective defenceman like Ryan Ellis while also retain the likes of Connor Brown. They may have had a better chance to win in this 3 year window than they actually will in the next 5 years with the way things are currently.

What'd you guys think of this team I made? Would they have been good enough to win the Stanley Cup?

Why bridge Mathews if the hit is like 500k less? I’d say 9.5 for AM and 7.5 Mitch.

I like it. They are definitely are a contender but I would tru to upgrade my 3C using a guy like brown. However those are expensive bridge deals. I’m thinking more along the lines of 8-9M for Matthews and 7-8 for marner.

I think this is what both the marner and matthews contracts should look like if dubas hadn’t overpaid

Hmm. They'd get further, for sure, but I'm not feeling like it's a SC winner here. Probably more like a tough conference final loss.

I don't mind the Matthews deal (2 years too short, but good otherwise) But I think they should have just traded Marner before him signing a contract. He had probably the best value at that point

I'm honestly not sure. The offense is insane but if Ellis gets injured this team is ****ed

Those bridge deals seem kinda high to me, but this team is better.

Take off the DeMelo trade. Don’t understand why the sens would rather trade DeMelo to the leafs instead of the jets

The "bridge deal" Matthews was asking for was like 9 million for 3 years.

I don't like it for NSH, but I wish Poile did this instead of trading Girard for Turris.

Really need an upgrade to 3C. I love brown and was sad to seem him go, but on this team he is still 4th line and for the leafs (not every team), that is to rich for them. The extra money would be better spent to upgrade 3C and have a < 1M contract on the 4th line.

If we've learned anything from the last few years, it's that the team on paper doesn't mean anything.

A couple seasons ago when Tavares ditched the Islanders for the Leafs, this site pretty much awarded them the Stanley Cup in July. Parade routes were being planned. The Islanders were likewise pegged for the league basement. Instead, the Islanders are one win away from the conference finals and the Leafs yet again failed to win even a single playoff series.

On paper, this team looks great, but in reality I don't think they'd do much better than the current team.

The "bridge deal" Matthews was asking for was like 9 million for 3 years.

Ok. Marner should be under 7 for 3 years and matthews wouldnt have gotten 11 on a bridge.

What'd you guys think of this team I made? Would they have been good enough to win the Stanley Cup?

Definitely better than the current leafs, if they stay healthy they would have a shot imo

Three years is a big deal, especially when they are both UFAs at the end and both could leave for more money or hometown(Matthews and Arizona being likely).
But you’re right, this team would be better. They would still have the same problem though. Depth. I definitely agree with @Hedman77 that Ellis is the only well-rounded elite defenceman there. Also, they lack a true 3C. And if the problem the past couple years really was Freddie(which I doubt it was, but it’s a possibility), then this team would be no better. But that’s unlikely. So for me, similar prediction to @mokumboi

I doubt the Nashville deal happens because their plan all along was to dump Subban for Duchene, who made it very clear that’s where he wanted to go. When you have a top 6 C say he’s signing with you as a UFA and you already have one top 6 C and two or three guys that can be a bottom six 6, you don’t trade a 1RD for another middle six C, especially when you had to trade another top 4 RD already (you can’t make a rookie your 1RD no matter how good he’ll be eventually). Also the Zaitsev deal doesn’t happen without Brown/Ceci that was kinda the point (the Sens really wanted Brown especially). Without Ellis this team is basically the same one that just got smacked by Columbus. I’m really not sure this team would win more than the qualifying round, maybe one round. I can’t see them pulling out the dub against more than one or two of the likes of CBJ, TBL, BOS, NYI, PHI, etc. those teams are just deeper and better coached. You can’t rely on your bottom six here, Kapanen and Mikheyev can play a bit but Spezza’s a 4th liner at this point in his career and that 4th line is nowhere near as effective as the NYI, TBL, or BOS 4th lines at creating energy and being physical/trustworthy for a few minutes per night. Also like others have pointed out those are not bridge deals. Matthews bridge is 9, Marner bridge is like 6.5-7 (9 is like 500k short of what Marner deserved on an 8 year deal tbh).

Team is great but the odds of either of them signing a bridge deal are next to none

Its better, having an actual RD really helps. You get an actual 1LW and a true 3c and then its gonna be in business

Definitely would be better off but no way they would have agreed to it

Why bridge Mathews if the hit is like 500k less? I’d say 9.5 for AM and 7.5 Mitch.

                  Yeah I guess that’s fair.
