Description
An Arizona fan said Kuemper was worth a 1st+B prospect. I threw in a lower end prospect as well.

I don't know what the Habs really want because they sometimes ask for Hanifin/Monahan despite seemingly being set on LD (Chiarot, Kulak, Romanov, Mete, tons of prospects?) and up the middle (Danault/Suzuki/Kotkaniemi/Evans). Seems to me like their most glaring weakness long term is at RW, where Gallagher, Armia, and Weal are all UFAs next year and they might have to cut ties with a couple of them because Tatar, Petry, and Danault are expiring too. Mangiapane is younger, can play either wing in the top 6 (was 2RW this year), and will be more affordable. Added a 2nd, and threw in an ok prospect because why not. This might be too much or too little for Domi idk, but I doubt it's really that far off either way.

Figured TyJo is worth a 2nd, so I put together an equivalent package. Janko should be a cheap 4th liner PK specialist but he still has 3rd line upside. Not worth his QO but Tampa has better taxes so he'll probably sign for a lower cap hit to get a shot there.

Ryan can be sent anywhere for a pick.

NYR seems like a great destination for Backlund+Kylington, they need LD and Kylington is a capable 3LD already, with top 4 upside, and Backlund is a great middle six C who can play up and down the lineup with whatever wingers you like and be relied on to get around 20 goals and be a defensively responsible shutdown guy.

I don't really know how much Girgensons and Schaller are worth, the point is just to sign two 4th liners to 1mil or less that can kill penalties (Nieto, M. Karlsson, N. Thompson, basically 2 guys that can be had for cheap) because our only other PKers are Lindholm and Rieder. Maybe give Chucky some PK time too instead of making him serve bench minors, I reckon he can handle it. Could try Bennett too, he works hard, I bet he'd learn a new skill to get more ice time. This might be a weakness we need to address at the deadline though. If Chucky or Bennett work out ok in a pinch, put Dube in the box for bench minors, he's fast and can actually score on a breakaway. Gawdin can also kill penalties but it's asking a lot to expect him to make the team full time and also be one of the main PKers immediately.

If the issue for ARI or MTL is you don't like the main prospect (MEP or Pospisil) replace with Ruzicka, Zavgorodny, or Phillips I don't really care tbh. Pelletier/Wolf are off the table.

I like Kuemper a lot but for only 2 years I would rather go after Lehner/Holtby for free.

I like the idea of going after Domi (or did before Bennett emerged as a legitimate center in these playoffs) but moving Mangiapane is a mistake. His fast and agressive playstyle is very important for our team and we need more of it. He is also one of the best players on the team in terms of GAR and Corsi.

Johnson has had a really subpar postseason. He could be worth targeting but definitely not at the cost of loosing Backlund and Ryan.

I’m kinda assuming for this one that we get outbid on Lehner/Markstrom/Holtby, otherwise I’d rather sign a free agent too. The advantage here is Kuemper is cheaper, which allows us to add 2 pieces to our top 6. Janko+3rd is honestly a pretty cheap price, and those are pieces we can afford to give up for a solid, versatile top 6 guy. Mangiapane is kind of a high price to pay for Domi but I think Johnson is better now and Domi is one of the very few 2Cs potentially available this off-season (I don’t think either of the Stromes are a fit here). Idk how we’d acquire Domi without Mang and without giving up another 1st (two 1sts is a lot to trade in one off-season even if it does make you better). Maybe if Mang is included we can downgrade the 2nd?

If we get a top 6 C, I think Backlund immediately becomes expendable. He’d be a fantastic 3C and I love what he brings to the team, but we have Bennett for 3C, and Backs costs over 5mil. The conundrum is I don’t think we can be competitive if Backlund is our 2C, and we have the cheaper Bennett for 3C so we’re either not a contender or we don’t need him. Ryan I think will be a cap casualty this summer regardless of what happens if GMBT is serious about improving the team. We can either ice the same roster as this year (we basically just have the cap to resign Brodie/Talbot/Mangiapane/Gustafsson to fair deals) or deal Ryan and cheap out on 3RD by downgrading Gus to Stone/Yelesin but get one additional top 6 player.

Sincerely,

Domi=Hanifin at best, you wouldn’t get a pick as well (honestly a proven top 4, potentially top pair D locked up for years at under 5mil vs. a guy who just hired a pain in the ass agent might mean MTL might have to add), but literally why do you want a left D when you have Chiarot, Kulak, Romanov, Mete, Struble, and Norliner at left D? The only real issue with Montreal in 2 years when they’re competitive is on the wings

I know I’m not for Hanifin but it’s the only ‘’possible’’ trade

How is it the only possible trade when LD is a position of strength both now and in the future, but top 6 wingers under the age of 25 is an area of weakness for Montreal?

We could use a top4 dman for 2-3 years
They’re no other piece interesting in CGY outside Hanifin, I was saying in CGY not overall

I'm really failing to see how Mangiapane isn't an interesting piece for a team with one top 6 winger signed past next season (and everyone seems to hate that guy lol). If you only want a top 4 D for 2-3 years may I interest you in the reigning Norris winner?

we need size and his stats do not show top 6 winger, . More like a 3rd line.

So Alfie11, I agree with your viewpoint on the Habs LD in a sense. Yes we have 4 NHL ready LDmen, but Kulak and Mete are both bottom pairing guys who never play well against top guys. Romanov is going to start so he'll be a bottom pairing guy for sure in the beginning. That leaves the depth chart as 1. Chariot and Romanov&Kulak&Mete all bunched together in the bottom pair. So now, we are really missing a top4 guy who can play with either Petry or Weber. This also means Kulak and Mete (in a perfect world) don't even make the starting lineup this year.
Norlinder and Strubble are still far off and likely not NHL ready yet.

Don't want Backlund's contract. If he can't fill CGY 2C hole he isn't filling ours.

Why would he be your 2C when you have Zibby and Strome? He’s more than capable of playing 2C if necessary due to injury or whatever but is an ideal 3C. Even if you don’t keep Strome he can play 2C until Chytil is ready for that role. He’s not a 2C on a contender but you won’t be a contender for a couple years, and will either have Strome or Chytil in that role by then, and he can then just be an excellent shutdown guy.

Hmm you’re right, Suzuki’s stats also showed more of a 3rd line player. Maybe Mangiapane for Suzuki then? /s

Mangiapane is a 2RW that plays an aggressive game, he’s a good young top 6 winger for sure. I don’t know why everyone is obsessed with size. Like it’s nice as a bonus but not necessary for a skill player, or even necessary to play a chippy playstyle. The only guy in Tampa’s top 6 rn that is taller than 6 foot is TyJo, who is 6’1”. Kotkaniemi is already taller than that so there’s your size.

He's not worth his contract and we need an upgrade on Strome. He isn't the answer.

Why do you need an upgrade on Strome? He’s got good chemistry with your best player and doesn’t have to be the #1 guy because you have Zibby. Even if you don’t think he’s the long term #2 why would Chytil not be? You don’t need a fantastic 2C next year, the Rangers aren’t gonna be competitive with questionable defense and several rookies/sophomores, so I don’t see how Backlund isn’t a fit one way or another. Either he shoulders heavy minutes against other teams’s top lines to shelter Chytil for a year or two and ease Zibby’s load defensively, or he’s your ideal shutdown 3C. Maybe his contract is 1 or 2 years too long for the Rangers and all their ELCs but it won’t be difficult to move because he’s more than likely still going to be an effective player, and he’s not THAT old.

Backlund is on the downswing and has a big contract we can't afford. Strome is not good defensively and needs Panarin to produce. If Panarin gets injuried, Strome is useless. We don't want codependent bums like him.

If you’re worried about Backlund being on the downswing, he isn’t yet. He’s not going to be a huge offensive producer but even in this down year for Calgary and not a complete season he put up his usual 15-20 goals and 45-50 points, while being outstanding defensively and on the PK. You can afford the contract for two years at least, especially if you run Strome and ADA out of town for only putting up points (???). I think it’s not really a big deal that Strome loses productivity away from Panarin because like, if you lose your Hart trophy candidate most teams are going to suffer, not everyone can be Tampa. You’re never gonna be able to afford a perfect team.
