Created by: danielcoe
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens

Description
See the second year of signing Hall the cap is super tight and that is with Domi and Tatar gone and alzner bought out..... so we might be better off trading for laine or ehlers or signing Hoffman rather than Hall who will get super big dollars

Good post. Yeah Hall at more than 7.5$ X 7years , I would not do. Also your post shows why imo we can't sign Gallagher. As much as I love Gally, I would like him at 5M$ X 5 years, and i'm not sure he agrees to that. Same for Petry. He will be 34, so I wouldn't sign him for that much. My guess is he'd be ok with less $$$ and longer term. I sign him at 4.5M$ X 4 years. Edler got 6$M from Canucks, but only for 2 years.
I totally agree with you about Armia and Danault money (although I think Danault asks for 5-7 years, to which I would agree.)

You know what... I thought that we would be in a worst situation...
Leaves Armia OUT as he is NOT a 1RW... insert Caufield = saves 2M
and I agree: Gally & Petry as much as I like them... NO at 7M each... and gives 6,5M to Danault please... we need to show respect

Montreal is one of few middle to good teams that could afford to sign Hall. Question is, is he going to worth his expensive long term contract?

NO one knows TBH... but I would invest more on him then Gally or Petry who ask for 7M + on a multi year contract

Since it appear that good RFAs are getting bigger money, it might be the current crop Montreal ELCs that will soon be entitled to bigger contracts soon. Maybe aging long term UFAs should be avoided all together for most teams.

I agree with most of this, too. Just my opinion (please don't hate), but I would personally sign Petry to a 7-7.5 million cap hit at 4 years. Again, that's just my opinion. He was lights out in this years playoffs. I completely agree with you on Gallagher: I love him, but I worry about the physical toll he has taken over the years. You could do worse than having Caufield, Armia, Ylonen, and Lehkonen on the right side (it's asking a lot of Caufield adn Ylonen, however. I think they make a move to address the right side this offseason).

They only reason why I won't sign Petry is because the amount of GOOD moving puck RD that will become UFA in the next 2 years... and you can get a younger Petry:
BArrie, Pulock, Shatty, Gusf, Vatanen, Tanev, Brodie this is only next year... and then when Petry contract would expired: Hamilton, Larsson, Savard, Niskanen, just to name a few...

I agree: I just worry about whether those options would actually sign here. Petry is a known commodity. I would also argue that Pulock and Hamilton might be even more expensive than Petry. As long as the Canadien's got another defenseman that is younger and equal to Petry, then it's a good choice not to resign. I am never usually conservative, though: Maybe a Domi trade could net them a young, right shot defenseman. BOY would that piss off Leaf fans. That alone would make it worth it. tears of joy

That's why I was tageting NYR with DeAngelo + Buch for a Domi, Kulak 2x2nd in fixing our line-up on another AGM

IMO, no. His injury history is extensive and he won't get less injury-prone as he ages unless he changes his play-style - but if he does that he won't be as effective. Over the past 7 years, his average season looked like this:

65, 22-38-60

So you're signing a guy who could be counted on to score 22 goals and 60 points per season in his prime. Projecting his decline over the next 7 years is impossible, but you surely need to account for it, as decline is inevitable. Can he be an 18-goal, 50-point player for the next 7 years? That's a pretty big ask IMO, but even if he can, that production certainly isn't worth $9M.

I'd do a 3 x $7M deal, but probably wouldn't go beyond that.

EXCELLENT anaylsis. I wouldn't touch him after 3 years. Many people say that he can "fix" a team, but I do not see it.

Petry has been light outs and we can't lose him and 40 point def get paid around 7-8 million... he still skates like the wind and 3 more year isn't too bad. Maybe you can get Gally for 6 million but he does score 30 goals and never quits
