Crazy High Risk High Reward Stamkos Idea

Description
So I’m sure I’ll get some hate comments here but hear me out. In any previous year, Steven Stamkos is untouchable unless a bundle of goodies is coming back and even then, they still likely say no. However, now that the Bolts are up against the cap, big salary will have to be shed in the offseason and due to Stamkos’ recent injury history plus the fact that Brayden Point has now more or less surpassed Stamkos on the depth chart, I can easily see Stamkos waiving his NMC and both sides mutually parting ways via trade. Unfortunately though, because of the constant injuries and the fact that Stamkos is now 30 years old which also means only a few good years left in him if he stays healthy, his value has dropped significantly and there’s no world where the Lightning can ever get everything they want for him. Buchnevich, Andersson, a 1st, and a 2nd is honestly being generous at this point and Tampa Bay may not have a choice in the matter in terms of accepting the offer if this is the best offer available to them. On the Rangers end of things, yes they’ll have to clear a little cap and trade most of their current RFAs since they’ll be too expensive now that Lundqvist will probably play out the final year of his contract, but if they do things properly, then they can take on Stamkos’ large cap hit. It’s a very high risk, high reward move because they could be filling that missing spot at center with one of the premium goal scorers in the league, or they could be getting a guy who can’t stay healthy and is highly overpaid for it. Granted the Rangers have arguably the best medical staff in the league and maybe that could help Stamkos stay off the IR more often. Regardless, while I don’t think it happens, I do think that it’s something worth looking into. Just saying.

I don't think the Stamkos idea is downright outrageous - far fetched for sure, highly unlikely. But if you were to try to get him it'd cost a fair bit more than that

Deangelo is not the type of D Toronto needs, but that's too hard to pass up on. We could easily just turn around and flip him for more if that's all it takes. Deal

Think stamkos gets a larger return and would be surprised if georgiev isn’t the backup next year tbh

Your value might not be too far off, I dunno, Tampa fans will likely see it differently. I think they are more likely to shed some cap by moving Johnson, Palat, Killorn, and maybe Gourde before moving Stamkos.

They’ll have to make other moves regardless, especially with Mikhail Sergachev and Anthony Cirelli due for raises, but yeah I do see Johnson being dealt/bought out in every scenario, Coburn probably goes too and someone will take him on since his cap hit isn’t bad at all, and I can also see Cedric Paquette being dealt since they have guys who can replace him easy. Aside from that, whatever else they do will depend on who else they plan on getting rid of. They may see getting rid of Stamkos as a necessary casualty to maintain their depth. Do I think it happens? No. However, they definitely shouldn’t rule out looking into it.

#1 Tony D is way undervalued so I'm guessing I know why you don't like him....

#2 I love the Stamkos idea but no way TB gives him up for THAT package. I've had this discussion with a few buddies of mine. My guess is Tampa is going to want.....
a 1st
a conditional pick
a top 6 wing or a RD
and probably a top prospect.

I actually love Tony D as a player and I tried to make this work without trading him. This is the first Rangers ACGM where I traded DeAngelo because I don’t actually wanna trade him. But unfortunately in order for me to make this work and given what he will probably want, I had to deal him to make room. Plus a lot of trade rumors revolving around Tony have them not getting much for him due to his RFA status and his supposed defensive liabilities. As far as the Stamkos deal goes, what you’re saying what they might want is nearly identical to what I put. 1st, check. Top 6 wing (Buchnevich), check. Top prospect (Andersson), check because of how he’s played in the SHL. Conditional pick, well I have a 2nd in there so maybe it could become a conditional pick that turns into a 1st based off of something relating to either the playoffs or Stamkos himself. So yeah I’m close with the offer I gave. Glad you like the idea of getting him. 🙂

Andersson regardless of what he's currently doing in the SHL is prob not even a top 5 prospect for the Rangers at this point. That's how much he's damaged his reputation as well as value.

Maybe not for the Rangers, but it’s possible that a team like Tampa could still view him as a top prospect or at the very least the best prospect that will be available to them.
