A.A. in Edmonton played on an 18 point pace, projected to 82 games. Panik in Washington last year played on a 31 point pace. Panik can kill penalties and shut down top lines. A.A. can't. That and the difference in cap hit makes up for the age difference. The trade is fair as is, and Edmonton would be lucky not to deal with arbitration on someone who clearly does not fit with their team.

If there are better offers out there, by all means, share.

Holtby is an all time great coming off an off-year, under a flat-cap. He's from Alberta and if the Caps don't have him in their plans, he might appreciate a chance to make a pitch to the Oilers.

Pánik would be a great fit on the Oilers for sure

Athanasiou has lesser value for sure

If Holtby was interested in EDM, why don’t the Oilers just sign him at free agency and get a pick in this trade?

I see more of it on the Pens side than the Caps side. Maybe he's Reirden's secret weapon? I don't know. But I thought some Pens fan offered some cheap NHL center for him. I think the Caps would be happier with a pretty solid NCAA RHD. Because the Caps have prospects at center, and their entire RHD depth chart under contract is currently: John Carlson and Nick Jensen.

Hags has topped 30 points in five of his eight seasons, and been on pace to get there in another two if he got in more games. He's the Caps' best penalty killing forward. There's no need to move him, let alone retain salary. I'm responding to a Pens fan trying to get him for Dominic Simon, who is RFA, not quite as good at offense, and nowhere close to half as good at defense. 2nd and a 4th maybe, without retention, but the Caps could use a decent RHD prospect. Their RHD depth chart, at all levels, under contract, right how: John Carlson, Nick Jensen.

If Reirden wants Hagelin back, he can afford to give up a decent prospect and a little bit of cap space. Would rather package Hagelin, plus picks to (edit: make an offer on Marino.)

Caps keep their best penalty killing forward who has played his career on a 36 points per 82 games pace, and hit 30 points in 5 of his 8 seasons, and been on pace for that mark in 7 of 8. Easy. I'm posting this in response to a Pens fan post trying to get Hagelin, with retention, for Dominic Simon (RFA rights) and a 5th. I can see why you guys would want a player who is good at both ends of the game plus retention for an average player or a mid round pick and a late pick, but it doesn't sound like a great deal. Teams don't retain on contracts with three years left, because teams don't want to pay enough to get retention for that long. It's not the money. It's that teams can only retain on three players at a time, so if the Caps tried to rebuild in two years, they wouldn't be able to, and a 5th round pick doesn't make them okay with that.

edit: now that's my kind of double post.
