If Letang Rumours Are True

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2020

Description
I for one, don't believe Letang is getting traded. The media doesn't seem to like him cuz he is short with them and have occasionally tried running him out of town, but he's always stayed. I am just making an armchair team IF the Penguins are indeed shopping him. Letang is still an elite number 1 defenceman and will be for the next few seasons, so his value needs to be very high.

But they aren't the same age. And this is from the guy who on a regular basis gives Marner away for scraps to feed some perverse pleasure of getting lit up by everyone.

im just saying the leafs say no, but this is probably his best Marner trade yet so at least he's learning

Seriously? Toronto retains almost one and a half million on Marner for 5 years for 2 years of a 33 year old defenceman?

Pens would need to add Guentzle plus.

Extremely unrealistic team but how do you guys think they look on paper? Are they good enough to win the cup?

Oh look, this guy makes a Marner trade in which the Leafs give him away. You are just never going to stop it with this Schtick are you?

Well at least it’s better than Marner for Jack Johnson. So in a few years he might be up to fair value lol.

With what cap space? Letang costs 7.5M plus we're retaining 1.5M on Marner. We save a grand total of 2M with that trade for 2 years and then pay 1.5M for nothing for the 3 years after that.

If you honestly think a 33 year old declining Letang for 2 years (at essentially 11.25Mx2 with the amount we are retaining) is even worth close to Marner at 9.5M for 5 more years you're deluding yourself.

Guentzle isn't even enough. You'd have to throw a couple 1sts on top of that.

Doubtful, he'll just change his name again. He used to be MikeyPensFan or some **** and now it's MitchMarnerElite. Next it'll be something else but the same. "Marner just doesn't look good, he should be traded for a bag of corn nuts and a squirrel" while he is scoring at a 90+ point pace.

Many teams would take Jake over marner at his full contract. Marner may be better, but is he worth almost twice as much? not to a lot of teams. Your proposal of Letang + Jake + several firsts is awful

Nobody takes Guentzle over Marner except maybe some fanatic Pens fans. When Gurntzle was Marner's age he put up 48 points playing with Crosby ...

The thing you don't get is he has Toronto retaining a massive amount on Marner.

The fact is Letang is overpaid now and the best years of his contract are behind him. This guy is on the decline.

This trade by @MitchMarnerElite is worse than the contract Dubas gave Marner.

The fact that Marner is by far the most overpaid young star in the league is of big concern for Toronto. Since when does 20-25G and 3/4 weak playoff years get you more than $10M AAV? Why did Dubas over pay him by so much? He deserved $8.5x8. Certainly not $11x6. Crazy. He's never gonna be a 40G+ player. His comp should've been Johnny Gaudreau adjusted for inflation. Maybe Draisaitl based on where he was when he extended. TOR is now stuck. They'll never win in the post season w/ zero offensive depth and weak D. Marner is the odd man out b/c Nylander's deal is too solid to trade and Tavares will never bring fair market value. The flat cap will crush this team.

Letang overpaid? He’s still an elite D in the leauge Lol get out of here. JFresh said his market value is 11.25 million and while his account isn’t the “be all end all” for analyzing players, it proves that 7.25 million for a #1D is good value
https://twitter.com/j_a155/status/1303310256404135936?s=21

And actually; a lot of non pens fans would also take Jake over Marner. There isn’t much debate about that. While I’m agreeing marner is the better player, his contract is no doubt overpaid and Jake is on a bargain deal. In a salary cap leauge, contract is very important.

Again, I’m not saying this is a good trade for the Leafs because it’s not. Although if Letang was younger it would be a steal for them. I’m just saying, your comment of Letang+Jake+ multiple firsts is wayyyyy off. Your comment about Marners value > Jake’s value is also off. And finally, your comment about Letang being “overpaid” is also off. Do some homework next time you post

I take Marner at 9.5Mx5 over Guentzel at 6Mx4 any day of the week.

Only way I'd consider taking Guentzel is if we aren't retaining on Marner and you have to pay him the full 11M.

Even then I wouldn't trade Marner at 11M for 2 years of Letang.

I did my homework. What your saying is just straight up wrong...

If you think Letang is a #1D I'd gladly take Marino instead.

Guentzel scores goals. A lot of goals. Guentzel shows up in the playoffs. He's ready for big time. Marner hides out on the half wall and picks up lots of secondary assists. Give me Jake and a #3 Center or a #4 D who can grind in the playoffs.

Marner at 9.5 over Jake sure. But marner at almost 11, I’ll take Jake and a lot of other non pens fans would agree.

And i said marner for Letang wouldn’t happen, retention or not. Marner’s age is too valuable.

Letang is still by far our #1 guy. Marino will probably never fill Letangs shoes. And he won’t be traded anyways so it’s just a mute point. Rob Rossi has either Malkin/Letang click bait every season. I remember back in 2013 he wrote an article saying Pens were gonna deal Letang for Lupal and Phanuef. It’s just click bait. Letang may not retire in Pittsburgh but as long as the Pens are going for it, he won’t be moved.

I always like to say that crosby and malkin always give you a chance to win a cup. So yes, this team absolutely could do it.

This is exactly what I was going to say. The only worry that I'd have is the potentially shaky goaltending. Jarry was very good this year, but I don't know how much trust I'd have in him.

Not a fan of that 3rd line -- I don't think those players would mesh together well. Having said that, yes, this is a good team.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah might have to juggle the lines a bit. I think Simon & Cousins, they can play a cycle game whereas Rust is more straight line. Could swap him with Kapanen but he is pretty much the same style

Yeah Marner definitely got overpaid. IDK why the GM gave him so much but they probably panicked & wanted to lock up their star player at all costs. If he gets traded it will probably be in a Retained Salary move like my example above, but for less.

What’d you think of this team I created? Are they good enough to win the cup?

1- Erm, what is this sorcery with over 12.5M sitting on LTIR? Are you planning to Tonya Harding their knees or something?

In other words, kiss Petro and Marner goodbye.

2- If Andersson is your 13th forward, you're not winning ****.

The guys on LTIR will get moved for peanuts / claimed on waivers. I was too lazy to trade them separately.
