Keeping Anderson

Created by: benjgc
Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 9, 2020
Published: Sep. 9, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Given Darren Dreger's comments about Josh Anderson hoping to sign long-term in Columbus, I took a swing at finding a way to still upgrade the team at the C position without giving up Korpisalo, and still managing the cap with raises for Anderson, Gavrikov and Dubois.

TRADE NOTES:

MON: Jenner would be a versatile piece with some sand for the Habs. He can play up the middle or on the wing, is one of the better faceoff guys in the league, and is good on the PK. Murray is fragile, but he's a great play-driving D on the left side (which I understand Montreal needs... Nutivaara could fit here instead).

CGY: Doesn't have to be the Flames, just please someone take Harrington far away from Columbus. I know there's a lot of turnover in the D corps for the Flames this offseason.

Not bad. Line-wise, I’d do a bit of shuffling - probably swap Atkinson and Nyquist, just because I think being on a line with two space creators would benefit Gus, and Cam’s never played the left side.

If the AHL is running, I’d probably put Nash in and send down Foudy, with the aim of telling him to go nuts on offence on the first line. Might do the same for Bemstrom - reassess them both around the middle of the season and bring them up to provide some jump in the second half.

I'm not sure having two fast guys like Cam and Domi works with Nyquist, who's definitely not the fleetest of skaters. He looked good with Foligno and Jenner in the playoffs. If Nash replaces Foudy and centers that line, I could see that being a favorite for Torts, even if it drove me nuts. But I'd be on board for sending down Foudy until he proves he's ready, then trade Nash at the deadline to open a spot for the kid.

Our left side isn’t as bad as a lot of people may think and we have some promising prospects coming up, I don’t see us moving Domi for an injury prone D even if he has good potential if he’s healthy. Jenner doesn’t have enough offensive upside and we have enough bottom 6 pieces. Makes more sense to keep Domi.

That's fair! I've just seen a lot of ACGMs with a trade around these parameters.

I mean I can see where you’re coming from but I really just see ya waiting it out a bit with our D situation. Kulak actually played well in the playoffs and we’re definitely banking on Romanov coming in this year and having an impact. Norlinder, Harris, Struble all are showing great signs of becoming NHL players. Our centre position is much better we really just need some top 6 wingers.

Easy no from Habs. Don’t have a need for Jenner, bottom 6 is filled up and Murray is always on IR, MTL gives up a 2nd on top of that? No dice

I like this a lot, but the Dubois contract seems a bit low for 8 years and I doubt Montreal would take that (even though I'd love them if they did)

I'd adjust by just trading the 2 (or at least Murray) separately
I've seen a decent amount of Winnipeg teams trading for Jenner, so maybe that's a fit
Maybe Montreal would be more interested in Murray for a 2nd or a 3rd and a late pick instead of a Domi package

Then you could look at trying to offer sheet a a guy like Cirelli or Burakovsky to fill the 2C role maybe
Even if you can't, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the worst to go into the year with Foudy as the 2nd line center. It's not a huge sample size, but between the 1 game callup vs Tampa in February and the 10 playoff games, he's shown enough that I wouldn't be too concerned with him in that role to start the year.

I really like what you have here though for sure, just looking for an alternative to the Montreal deal since I can't see them accepting.

Agreed, and I think Cirelli in particular would be a Torts favorite because of his defensive skill.

I'm very high on Foudy, but he doesn't play with much hockey sense; there's a lot of hero-ball from him where he just skates around and looks for an opening for himself, rather than using his speed to open up chances to pass to a teammate. If he ever figures it out, look out.
