Brodin in a 3-way

Created by: newballcoach
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 10, 2020
Published: Sep. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
3-way trade is Dermott and a first to Arizona (allows them to cut salary). Minnesota gets Schmalz and Kuempfer (goalie and 2C they need). Toronto gets Brodin. Maybe Minny needs to send AZ something, but I think it's a plausible scenario, even if value is not perfect. I don't love moving Dermott considering his age, but Sandin is likely as good or better right now and he isn't able to move up in the lineup. He's good, but expendable.

I think Johnsson can help Edmonton which is why I moved him there.

You still have space under the cap where you can add another 4th line piece or 3rd pairing competition.

Values are way off! Toronto (go figure) isnt giving up nearly enough here!

Edmonton has very little cap space this off-season, they won't be allocating $3.4M for a 4th line winger.

I think they could certainly find a way to flip them a pick or a Hartman/Donato type. Perhaps even Kahkonen or a prospect. I don't know the Wild well enough to make that decision, was more concerned about the Leafs end TBH.

Genuinely curious. You said values, is there another spot where the value is off? I honestly think Arizona is going to be looking to shed salary, and Minny can use a pending UFA to upgrade in goal and at centre (which are two big needs). What would Toronto need to add in your opinion?

They're giving up a young, cost efficient Dman and an unprotected 1st for a rental upgrade on D. Minnesota is the team not giving up enough. They receive a 2C and a bonafide starter, both of whom have term, for a rental Dman. Minny should be sending something to Arizona.

A 2nd for sure. im assuming that 1st will be a low one, so it doesn’t push the needle much. Brodin and a 2nd or 3rd for Schmaltz and Kuemper makes dome sense, but Toronto would definitely have to give more for either of the returns here. Dermott and the 25th-ish pick isn’t going to get you Brodin, or Schmaltz and Kuemper.

Your opinion there is fair. If Toronto has to give up a 1st,2nd and Dermott, I wouldn't be doing this deal, way too rich for a guy who is going to UFA in a year and only adds value at one end of the ice. I was factoring in Arizona's need to dump salary and their desperation for draft picks considering they have lost them due to the punishment from the scouting scenario. I'm not really a huge fan of the Leafs trading Dermott and I think Arizona could really use his speed and puck movement on their back end (which is mostly older).

Rentals are only rentals at the tdl. No GM would give up big assets for a great player without at least having the parameters of the next deal worked out.

Johnsson is a 4th liner winger? Lol that must mean Larsson is a ahler

Solid points, but i do think you are underestimating Brodin’s impact. He’s an elite defendrr, a one man breakout machine, and better offensively than given credit for. He had 28 points in 69 games (i think) while getting only 23 seconds of PP time per game. Suter runs the show in MN and dictates his own icetime...and hogs all the PP time for himself!

That's just frankly not true. A rental is a player on a UFA expiring contract. Brodin is a rental atm. But regardless of what you want to call it, Minnesota is the team that unquestionably needs to add to this.

5v5 goals this year WHILE PLAYING OVER 75% OF THE TIME WITH AUSTON MATTHEWS: 3 (three)

I'm being generous calling him a 4th liner. Edmonton has zero interest in taking on that much cap for next to nothing, let alone giving up assets for it.

Did you ever realize he was injured? And not everything is about goals tears of joy. I'll even say Johnsson > Kapanen

Johnsson was really, really bad this year and you know it. There's a reason Every. Single. Leafs AGM on this site has him being moved for peanuts. He's simply not worth his contract.

You're over exaggerating how bad he was this year (I'm not arguing that he was good) and completely ignoring the year previous. To say that calling him a 4th liner is generous is ridiculous and you know it.

Oooo, he scored 20 goals. Great. Alex Chiasson scored 22 in 2018-19 and he's a 4th liner. It's not an insult, the bottom-6 is where Johnsson belongs.

If you're cool with a guy scoring 3 goals in over half a season while playing with a superstar center and making $3.4M, then keep_him.
