Hoffman

Description
Is anyone gonna give Hoffman more than that? Covid contracts gonna be rough.

Tarasenko comes back and Hoff moves over to 3LW, Sanford/Blais goes on the block and the cap works. Nice thing about Hoffman is that you can probably leave him off the expansion protection list at his age/AAV.

What do you think - good signing if Petro walks? Would it take more term to get him to sign?

Covid contracts may be rough, but all it takes is for one owner to get trigger happy, and then everyone else will follow. I view it as similar to coming out of a lock-out. Owners cry about lack of profits, whine about greedy players, etc., and then all of the sudden: BOOM! Craig Leopold drops down from the rafters and signs Parise and Suter to two of the most expensive contracts ever (at the time), other owners cry foul for a bit, then inevitably follow suit.

Not necessarily if he misses a month or two. The space saved by LTIR probably works itself out by then.

I'm not a huge Hoffman guy. Lot of empty calorie goals in the sense that he scores a lot but his defensive impact is so bad that it counteracts anything he does on offense. Maybe that changes if he's playing with someone like O'Reilly, but if I'm dipping into the free agent market, I'd go after Craig Smith, who can play up as needed but is better suited for a middle-six role that he'd play when Tarasenko comes back. He'd be cheaper too, maybe cheap enough to allow a signing like Rutta or Braun to bolster the right side sans Pietrangelo.

Yeah I could see some team throwing caution to the wind and giving him 6x6. maybe there's a chance he likes the fit with STL and there aren't many other contenders talking with him? I dunno, I was just looking for a Tarasenko replacement and the UFA route may be the way to go right now. Nobody's gonna give up a good contract goal scorer for cheap. Underrated aspect of Hoffman is he was such a late bloomer; at age 30 he only has 6.5 seasons of NHL wear and tear.

Craig Smith quietly gets 20 goals every year. He'd def be a good option, and cheaper. Hoffman would be a nice shooting threat on the PP - maybe he could tighten things up on D a little bit in STL. I never thought his impact was that negative in OTT but I could be wrong.

Don't worry man! You won't need Hoffman. If Pietrangelo walks, Toronto is the only team that he'll go to, so you'll inevitably give up a 1st and 2nd rounder to get Johnsson from them (to help them out because you're kind), and you'll automatically have one of the greatest 3rd liners to ever play!

Also, I'd kinda like to see Hoffman go to San Jose so we could the finale of Mrs. Karlsson vs. Mrs. Hoffman (or was it his girlfriend?)

How much do you value locker room chemistry/presence? He's one of the worst guys to be around (personal experience working in Ottawa). But, he scores goals and has all the assets to be an elite offensive weapon. Great shot, great vision and great tools to be a legit top 6 winger. Offensive zone starts are a must for him. Lazy AF in D zone. Worth 6 million for 25-30 goals consistently.

Yeah, definitely a guy that you just want goals from - the Blues have some good defensive forwards and playmakers and I'm not sure if Perron and Schenn are going to be able to carry the goal-scoring load consistently for the next 2-3 yrs. I think the Blues room has been a good place since the cup run / turnaround so I wouldn't worry about him coming in and destroying anything, but you never know some of that BtS stuff.

I've heard the same- apparently his significant other is a piece of work too. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there an incident between Karlsson's wife and Hoffman's gf?

Alleged. Nothing concret but there was a degree of separation between the hockey wives and her. Its all complicated and strange. Didn't help that Ottawa was the centre of BS for almost all of that season. That report was just the cherry on top.

No that's right, he was much much better than he has been in Florida the middle part of his Ottawa career, between 14-15 and 16-17 he was nearly 1 GAR/60 all of those years which is great. He'd been on the decline since, his last year in Ottawa and then his two in Florida. Those teams were bad, so it might not all be his fault, but he's also 30 so it's also possible he's just already hit the aging curve. Those great years were right in his "prime".

That's gotta be a big no thanks from me, as noted above Hoffman's obviously impressive O-zone work is completely destroyed by his play in the other two zones. More importantly, I'd much rather use that money to re-sign all the guys who need a new contract next offseason.
