Description
Jost, Nichushkin, and Zadorov get one year deals. This buys a little time to see which, if any, are long term pieces for the team. It's possible Zadorov and/or Jost are traded, but I think it could be a smart move to keep both and reassess after the year and the expansion draft. There is always the deadline if it turns out they need veteran presence on the back end or something like that.

Graves and Burakovsky get three and four years, respectively. Burakovsky clearly belongs in the top 6, and Graves is inexpensive enough that this isn't a huge risk. More term for them makes sense.

Sakic finally makes his big splash with Hall for only a shrewd two years. It's an affordable deal that allows for a couple runs at the Cup. Hall decides he is still young enough to land a pretty nice deal after the flat cap era and follows through on his claim that winning is the most important thing for him right now.

I have the team carrying three goalies, as a condensed schedule could force more of a rotation and potentially result in more injuries. Getting nights off could be important if the league decides to pack in as many games as they can in a shortened season. I'm stealing the Anderson idea from another AGM. He's old, but he can probably still be effective in a limited capacity.

In terms of trades, Cole and Donskoi are moved for youngish defensive depth. Having these assets could be valuable after the expansion draft, and it also provides a safety net for the current year in case someone goes down. Cole goes to another contender with salary retained (this may make sense if Boston loses Chara, Krug, or even both, but if not then he goes elsewhere). Donskoi goes to a place that will likely need middle six wingers that aren't too costly. I'm thinking that NHL ready depth provides a better return than picks, but that's probably debatable.

Not shown is that Landeskog is re-signed for 6-7 years at something around $7M. I have a funny feeling something may happen with Grubauer too (maybe 2-3 more years at around $4-4.5M, depending on the term), as other goalie options will prove costly and undesirable. Deals for Makar and Timmins will come after the season.

That's it. LTIR = guys I think are really good bets to be future NHLers.

Thats a very interesting bruins trade
Ian Cole is getting up there in age, but also IFFFFFFFFF Krug walks and Chara retires, its not out of the realm of possibilty

However, it does depend on those two factors

Yeah it's contingent on what else happens in Boston for sure. Cole is probably just as good on the right, which is a nice luxury to have and something they could put value on. We'll see.

im curious about Rask, I assume he is coming back to Boston but if something weird happens as a fall out of him leaving the bubble and isnt going to retire, I wouldnt mind Avs checking in on him.

I would assume boston would be open to this bc they want to keep Krug as well.

he said hes playing out his contract so id say its 99% certain he plays for the Bs next year. would be a great pickup for Avs if the situation presented itself tho

I dont think hes going anywhere but if things get silly in the next month. I wouldnt hate that move.
I like the idea of Rask as a stop gap and mentor for Annunen, probably the top finnish goalie prospect out there

with Vladar and Swayman in the mix and legit goalie prospects, wouldn be crazy to think they start the Net transition with those guys primed to take the next steps

yea theyre in a tricky spot, dont want to rush them and boot out Halak/Rask and end up making their team worse but also dont want to let them rot in the minors too long. will be interesting to see how it all plays out

In this weird scenario I am cooking up in my head, Grubauer would be going the other way, so Boston is still getting a quality starter as a stop gap so their kids arent rushed and they get the additional cap space for Krug.

In theory this seems like maybe this could work....in reality it wouldnt haha

Solid logic, 2 tid bits Newhook Is committed to either BC or Halifax and Graves played his way out of a 3 yr deal, but again solid logic all around.

I mainly signed Newhook just for the visual in LTIR. It seems BC is going to play.

As for Graves, I thought about going shorter. At worst he's a good 3rd pairing player though, and his contract will be cheap. Thought it would be good to lock up one if him or Z. I can see the argument against though too.

Honestly everything is sound, but I feel a Graves or Zadorov trade is more likely. Cole would make a great mentor for Byram for one year. Makes Makar's extension a bit tight if he gets 8 mil +. Like the Hall deal and it could make sense for him if things go well for the NHL financially.
