Teams that set a 70 Mil internal cap

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 10, 2020
Published: Sep. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is just speculation based on rumours of teams setting low 70 Mil internal caps.

These are the teams I figure might have an internal cap set by the owners. Which might mean that very good players are going to be sold for pennies on the dollar. Question is who sells low to get in the low 70 Mil range and what players can you pickup if you have the space.

Pittsburgh (rumour has it they were hit hard by lack of revenue)
Florida
Buffalo
Carolina
Anahiem
San Jose
Los Angeles
Winnipeg
Arizona
New Jersy
Columbus
Minnesota
St. Louis

I will try not to totally screw teams and stay close to reasonable value but teams are going to have to take a loss to shave 5-8 Mil off their books.

Why is Carolina on this list? Are we still regretting the 21 million we have already paid Aho or something?

Nope just a small market team that could potentially want to reduce payroll due to no ticket sales.

We are one of the few that didn’t reduce salaries to front office folks. GM already came out and said we would be close to the cap again.

Maybe Danault ( extend ) + Fleury vs Ehlers + Perreault is more realistic

I mean if there are no or little fans in the buildings most of these teams are headed for a bad time. There just isn't the tv money like the NBA or NFL to keep teams afloat

Why wouldn't Montreal be it that category?? They were ~5 mil under the cap 19-20.

Ottawa passes. Their internal cap has been ~64 mil. And it will probably be ~56 plus Gaborik. Taking on 8+ mil of dead space doesn't help. Even for a 2021 1st.

If Danault is going to cost about the same as Ehlers why not just buy out Perrault themselves??

MTL are literally one the richest teams in the league.... Rangers probably #1, Toronto #2, then the Habs or Chicago around 3rd or 4th... the fact that MTL didn't spend to the cap doesn't mean they can't....

They didn't.......They tried to spend (they were heavily chasing Duchene, but he chose Nashville. They freed up a mountain of cap the year before to chase Tavares, but he never even returned their call *sigh*).

I should have specified, why did they make salary reductions with staff? If they are so rich.

Ok gotcha. Well obviously the pandemic is affecting that, as it is basically every other team. Unless I read it wrong, I think so far it's only the Leafs who haven't cut staff salaries, no?

I don't doubt for a sec that the top richest teams in the league won't cut cost to the players salary cap. Habs included. Heck, they just acquired a $4+mil aav back up for Price lol That should give you a good indication for their player spending.

That is true on the Allen pickup. Them weaponizing space like that to get some good players should work well for them. Your thoughts on them going after Hall? Try to sell this playoff run plus young kids as a team to compete.

If Hall can take less than $9mil aav ($8-$8.5?) for less than 6 years, I hope Habs go for it with him. Odds are low of that happening however. MTL has always struggled in the free agent department.....

Habs have better chance weaponizing their cap space for sure. Reading more about affected teams with low budgets. Seravalli stated BUF, ARI, and PIT as the teams looking to be in the $70mil range for their cap.

MN will probably be a cap team, but with rentals. They are in a good spot now, but need to have space after next season to sign a bunch of RFAs.

The question is, where do all the FAs go if a bunch of teams are on internal caps?

Also, on the Athletic Jim Rutherford mentioned Pittsburgh having an internal cap. I think it was around 75 million.

Seems like you made too many assumptions in forming your list. San Jose was one of the few teams that did not reduce any front office salaries and Hasso is the wealthiest owner in the NHL. San Jose is going to be a cap team.

My rationale behind this is Danault is very close value to Ehlers so by taking the Perreault contract they would have to compensate the Habs thus I added Vesalainen.

Vesalainen is a 2017 1st round pick, not a throw in
+ if they do Danault vs Ehlers they save 3M so they can keep Perreault

But would they want to keep Perrault on their books or trade him to make room for defensive upgrades? Personally I would take the space and use it to upgrade the D but that's just one man's opinion LOL.

Yes maybe, but it would definitely not cost something more than a 3rd round pick to move him
