Creating Cap Space

Created by: nuxfan
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2020
Published: Sep. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Main pieces involved in the trades; perhaps draft picks are swapped to balance out the trades.
Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Kesler, Ryan
Additional Details:
If Kesler is placed on LTIR Anaheim owes him $2.67M which would mean Anaheim would take on an additional $0.28M in this trade; however, involving a third team in this trade would save Anaheim $$$. Moving Sutter at a $1,093,750 cap-hit and Baertschi at a $841,666.50 cap-hit to another team would mean Anaheim would save $1.195M in actual salary.
ANA
  1. Baertschi, Sven ($1,683,333 retained)
  2. Sutter, Brandon ($2,187,500 retained)
Additional Details:
Sutter is owed $3.5M and Baertschi is owed $2.4M. At 50% retained salary they would be owed $2.95M.
2.
VAN
  1. Santini, Steven
Additional Details:
Santini is owed $1.65M. Nashville saves $50K through this trade.
NSH
  1. Benn, Jordie
Additional Details:
Benn is owed $1.6M.
3.
VAN
  1. Schneider, Cory
Additional Details:
Schneider is owed $12M; a buyout would cost $8M. Either way Eriksson is cheaper. New Jersey saves $3M/$7M through this trade.
NJD
  1. Eriksson, Loui
Additional Details:
Eriksson is owed $5M.

Kesler is on a LITR, so this doesn’t give any help to the Ducks cap space.

This is actually very interesting work. Also seems like the kind of team (management) that would want Sutter.

You are right, but maybe it helps with the actual salary? I'm not sure how much insurance covers for Kessler.

Kesler isn’t much of a problem right now as much as Perry’s contract. Ducks should have never bought out his contracts

I was thinking about the trade with the intent to free up actual $$$ for the Ducks instead of cap space.

Bingo! Made the trade with the intent to free up actual salary. If I'm not mistaken, insurance covers 80% of Kesler's contract so the Ducks owe him $2.67M for the remainder of his contract.

Definitely. At least the big hit is only this year? Or maybe 2 years? I've actually been surprised with his play in the playoffs. Can't cut it in a top 6 role, but bottom line guy, he seems effective. Love that he is still such a dbag.

Insurance usually covers 80% of the contract so the team is on the hook for the remaining 20%.

I like some of the thinking here. If the Canucks can take advantage of cash flow deals to cover over cap issues that would be great. Wish we had Gilman in our team right now.

Question: when "salary is retained" does that mean not cash and cap AAV?
