1 Year Deal For Taylor Hall

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2020
Published: Sep. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know that not a lot of people like him or rate him, but I believe the Penguins should take a shot at Taylor Hall if they clear enough cap space this offseason. For me, he is a top 5 LW alongside Ovechkin, Panarin, Marchand and Gaudreau based on performances over the past 3 seasons. Obviously this season was a down year by his standards, he still drove offence at an elite level but his defensive play was horrendous. Generally he’s known to be a possession monster who generates a very high amount of shot attempts and chances while his expected goals against ranks in the top 30 percent amongst forwards. He is extremely fast, physical and was scoring at a 90 point rate in 2 of the last 3 seasons despite playing on weak teams. In order to sign him, they’ll need to move Bjugstad, Johnson and Hornqvist which may be difficult to accomplish, but I made a hypothetical lineup below of this scenario:

What'd you guys think of this team? Would you entertain signing Hall?

I think Pit should make every attempt at going for it for the next few years so I don't necessarily think this is a bad idea. Sid Malkin and Letang probably still have a couple good years left so why not. However, if Hall is willing to sign a 1 year deal when he could probably get term somewhere, I think he would be better off going with the Avs for a year where they have a better shot. Even if it is few a few less $.

Gonna be a no from me dawg. Assets will need to be moved to shed Bjugstad or JJ, don't think either is getting claimed. Also, Pittsburgh gave up a bunch to acquire Kapanen and Zucker, doesn't make sense to me that either of them and especially not Guentzel and Rust stay out of the top 6.

All that money being allocated to a LW when our top 6 is pretty damn set doesn't make much sense. This team needs a 3rd line that is actually going to have an impact. I'd rather spend the money there tbh

I just wanna know who’s claiming Jack Johnson. If they are is it a call for distress?

The issue is no one is taking Johnson or Bjgustad off waivers. You'll have to pay to move them.

How can one be so good at undervaluing one player (Marner) and be so good at Overvaluing another (Murray)

Also no one is claiming jugs and Johnson.

Yeah that's why I didn't really like the Kapanen trade. Gave up a lot of assets for a guy who wasn't exactly proven to solve their needs at 1RW. Would've rather signed Hall and run Guentzel-Crosby-Zucker, Hall-Malkin-Rust. Or maybe trade McCann + Murray for Marner instead.

You don't think the 3rd line I set up (Tanev-McCann-Rust) is good enough to make an impact? 3 guys who are really quick and can outwork the opposition in their own end.

Bjugstad is a good player who's still young, there will be a GM willing to claim him. As for JJ, it's gonna take someone really dumb to take him.

like the person who signed him, I think Jr is the dumbest gm in the league.

Yeah GMJR has done lots of dumb things no doubt. But he's not the only one and still has 3 cups, which most other GMs do not have.

There are lots of teams interested in Murray. He will fetch a higher return than you think.

He's a $4.1m claim for a guy that was injured all last year; that limits the teams that can claim him during the season. Some bottom feeder team might take a chance on to see if they flip him at the deadline, but they still need the cap (internal or not) to take the chance on him.

Not bad. Doubt Hall signs here on a 1 yr deal, but who knows. Gonna be tough to shed that JJ contract, but someone will claim Bjugstad probably.

Well, I already said enough about claiming Bjugstad and JJ. The same for Horny trade. My only problem here is to give 10M to Hall, even for just 1 year. First of all, I don't think he'd accept a contract for just 1 season. Even 10M. And second, he doesn't worth that much. I'd prefer to sign Dadonov for half of this prize in this scenario or even Hoffman for much less. However, I think Hall will get something between 6 and 7M for 2 or 3 years. I can't see any team giving him that much. Not even close. Maybe not even Pietrangelo will and he's a no-brainer as the most valueble player in next FA.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't agree with your take on Hall. Based on his statistics and on-ice results over a 3 season sample size, he's performed at the level of a top 5 LW in the game. His market value is around 10 million, so he'd be worth every penny. Here's a look at his stats since 2017/18:

If he gets less than that, it will be because of the league's financial situation as most teams can't afford to pay big salaries.

I got your point. The problem is that he had a quite season offensively. 18 goals and 40 assists in 74 games isn't fancy numbers to worth 10M. Not even close. The season before he just played 33 games scoring just 11 goals in 33 games. That's not that good for a sniper like him. The point is that the GMs have "short memory" when they offer contracts. It means that what really matters to make them decide how much they'll offer is last season performances. And last season was a "just ok" season for Hall. I'd never give him more than 7M for 2 or 3 years, because he's getting injured recently and his offensive production declined. But I agree with you in one specif point: league financial situation will affect his contract and all the others as well. We'll see what's gonna happen in FA...
