1 Year Deal For Taylor Hall

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2020
Published: Sep. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know that not a lot of people like him or rate him, but I believe the Penguins should take a shot at Taylor Hall if they clear enough cap space this offseason. For me, he is a top 5 LW alongside Ovechkin, Panarin, Marchand and Gaudreau based on performances over the past 3 seasons. Obviously this season was a down year by his standards, he still drove offence at an elite level but his defensive play was horrendous. Generally he’s known to be a possession monster who generates a very high amount of shot attempts and chances while his expected goals against ranks in the top 30 percent amongst forwards. He is extremely fast, physical and was scoring at a 90 point rate in 2 of the last 3 seasons despite playing on weak teams. In order to sign him, they’ll need to move Bjugstad, Johnson and Hornqvist which may be difficult to accomplish, but I made a hypothetical lineup below of this scenario:

I got your point. The problem is that he had a quite season offensively. 18 goals and 40 assists in 74 games isn't fancy numbers to worth 10M. Not even close. The season before he just played 33 games scoring just 11 goals in 33 games. That's not that good for a sniper like him. The point is that the GMs have "short memory" when they offer contracts. It means that what really matters to make them decide how much they'll offer is last season performances. And last season was a "just ok" season for Hall. I'd never give him more than 7M for 2 or 3 years, because he's getting injured recently and his offensive production declined. But I agree with you in one specif point: league financial situation will affect his contract and all the others as well. We'll see what's gonna happen in FA...

It’s not only about goals though. Hall has many different playing styles, he’s an excellent playmaker, he’s got the size & physicality to be a good power forward, he’s got the speed & relentlessness to be a good forecheckers & puck retriever. That’s what makes him valuable, he can impact the game in every aspect. His down year in production was moreso due to poor finishing by both himself & his linemates, cuz individually he was still near the top of the league in chances generated. A comparable for Hall would be Panarin, who before he signed the contract was a consistent 25-30 goal & 70-80 point guy per full season.

You don't think the 3rd line I set up (Tanev-McCann-Rust) is good enough to make an impact? 3 guys who are really quick and can outwork the opposition in their own end.

I don't think any of those guys have what it takes to carry a line. They are all quality compliments, but none of them are "the" guy to a line. I think that's why McCann struggled in the second half. Also, Tanev just doesn't have he 5v5 offensive ability to make me feel good about an expanded role for him.

Yeah that’s fair, I guess you can consider them more complimentary forwards than anything. However, I think it would be a good combination as all 3 guys can skate really quick, they can play a defensive game & can generate offence off the rush. Plus Rust & McCann are pretty good at generating possession & shot attempts as well.

Would rather trade Letang and go after Pietrangelo than get Hall. Would make sense money-wise too, as a Letang get for someone might just be enough for someone to absorb 2/3 of Johnson's deal as well.

If I were JR I'd be calling Arizona every day to see what it would take to get Ekman-Larson as well. Every indication is Arizona is going to be facing a tank scenario soon and this lack of revenue isn't helping them.

What'd you guys think of this team? Would you entertain signing Hall?

Thanks for the feedback. Bogosian was bad in Buffalo but in TBL, he's turned it around playing a pretty big role. Of course those guys would work as well.
            Missouri liked this.
