I mean at least they didn't trade a draft pick to sign Alzner to that awful contract.

Yeah at least we can just bury his contract. Thank god we didn't give him a NMC and our GM can manage the cap.

You have to take chances if you want to win. This one did not pay off. Oh well

It gives Montreal 3 weeks to sign a guy who they likely already have a handshake agreement with.

I mean if you want to call getting a 5th round pick for a guy who was a main piece in the Faulk trade a robbery.. ok

Just don't overpay and it's fine but who's out? Romanov, Mete, Chariot, Kulak, Edmundson.

They traded a 5th round pick for nothing... the guys going to free agency unless Montreal offers him more than he thinks he can get on the free market. At which point why not just wait a couple months for a guy Carolina wasn't gonna sign anyways.

Kulak/Mete

I honestly think this trade was made because we traded Scandella. I imagine Bergevin actually wanted to keep him, but St.Louis overpaid for him so Bergevin had to let him go. We got a 2nd for him and traded a 5th for an equal value player.

Now Montreal has 3 weeks to negotiate with Edmundson alone. There are no other competitors. If we don't sign him... wow we lose a 5th round pick, not like we need it.

Guys, stop saying we traded a 5th for Edmundston, we traded a 5th to have 3 extra weeks of negociation (which doesnt make sense from my point of view)

I mean, I can't see the Canes refusing to accept a 7th pick for those 3 weeks... Extra picks dont mean waste them

So with this move

Chariot-Weber
Kulak-Petry
Edmonson-Mete

guess they want Romanov in the AHL to settle in

Odds of seeing Romanov in the AHL is practically zero. He has a clause in his contract that allows him to go back to the KHL if he doesn’t make the Habs

Man, our FO is good at this. We're back in the 5th round for absolutely zilch. So now it's Faulk + CAR 5th for Bokk (late 1st round value), MTL 5th (upgrade), and STL 7th. Not a bad haul.

BTW people, a 5th isn't worth sh*t.

Now look at this:

Chiarot-Weber
Romanov-Petry
Edmundson-Fleury

Good luck to pass by 💪😅

An equal value player who is three years younger. I don't like the fact that Bergevin gave a draft pick to get his signing rights. That was a nice move on Carolina's part. However, I do think the Canadiens will end up signing him. Jake Allen is on the same team. I'm more worried about the term and the money though. This is a guy that got two consecutive one year deals in arbitration. How much there will be left for another forward? I do not think he will end up like Karl Alzner as he is way more physical. I'm more worried about the bad penalties and lack of discipline. I think that the habs want to make their d-core as physical as they possibly can.

Karl Alzner 2.0?

I'd say more of a Muzzin 2.0 for a 5th.

I might be overtinking it here, but do you think there is any chance that Montreal is using him as a useful player for a year, that they can also leave exposed to the expansion draft.

Montreal can protect 3 Defenders.
LD- Ben Chiarot(Protect one of the two or defer to the two scenarios below)
LD- Brett Kulak(Protect one of the two or defer to the two scenarios below)
LD- Alexander Romanov(if a good/Great 20-21 season 2nd liner)

RD- Shea Weber (MTL should protect)
RD- Jeff Petry (MTL should protect)
RD-Josh Brook(if a good/Great 20-21 season 3rd liner)Does not need to be protected less than 3 years

I am hoping that Montreal does one of two things if not both. Use our assets to obtain a top line LD or to acquire a top 4 Defence prospect that in NHL ready and does not need to be protect during the expansion draft.

Karl Alzner, cant be exposed because he will not have the minimum NHL games in the last 2 years.

If Edmundson has a decent season and a good contract due to the situation we are in with all sports, due to the pandemic opening up lower value short term contracts. He might be an attractive pick for Seattle.

This will lets the Canadiens have a Defender to expose to the draft that has the required games and contract length.

Defenders I am leaving out
Mete - Think he will be added to any package trade that is trying to upgrade our roster)
Juulsen - might not meet Minimum NHL games
Fleury - might not meet Minimum NHL games

Not great for obvious reasons. But we have the picks to spare, and if Berge likes him, well, all we can do is hope for the best. Berge also liked Scherbak and DeLaRose, so not optimistic

Scherbak had a ****ty attitude and De La Rose is an NHLer, not good examples. Bergevin has made more good moves than bad moves so you should be optimistic.

Edmundson is a solid defenseman. He fits what Montreal likes with his size

No he doesn't. He's worse than any of the players Montreal has on the left side and likely pushes out a better player form the lineup.
