Initial Creation Date: Sep. 12, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NEXT SEASON

Coming off the books:
Petersson - 900k
Hughes - 900k
Pearson - 3.7m
Weal - 1.4m
Sutter - 4.3m
Demko - 1m
Edler - 6m
Benn - 2m
Baertschi 2m (in minors)
------
Spooner buyout - 1m
Cap space this season 2.5m
------
Total: 25.7m

KEY players to resign:

Petey - 10m
Hughes - 8m
Demko - 4.5m

Total: 22.5m

I know there are many more players to resign and holes to fill, but lots will be minor league deals, and there's a potential for Rathbone to slide in on an ELC, as well as Podkolzin on the RW. Plus, if the team can pay off Seattle to take Myers, Roussel, or Ferlend off the books then they're sitting in a decent (not great) spot moving forward.

Domi proved so much more than Virtanen. It's not even close.

I really like Brock Boeser

But i think Carolina should decline here

I would counter with Jake Bean, a 2021 1st and a lesser roster player

Canes wouldn't do this if it was a straight Pesce for Brock trade. Asking the Canes to also give a 2nd rounder is laughable.

Maybe if Van takes Gardiner off their hands.

No. You simply don’t trade Hoglander. And I find it useless to acquire both Pesce and Cernak. Get Cernak and keep Boeser. I think Montreal would ask for more quality

I honestly see Hoglander as a 3rd liner with 2nd line skill. I'd give that up over Demko or a first to get rid of Eriksson's full contract

That's a good return value-wise, but I think if Boeser goes it needs to be for a legit RHD.

Domi is cheaper than Boeser, and scored 28 goals a year ago. Hopefully he can find some of that junior chemistry again with Horvat.
If Virtanen goes, it'd be smartest to toss a Roussel, Beagle, or Baertshi with him.
Aquellini's (allegedly) are worried about cash flow in the coming seasons. I'm unsure if they'd sign off on sending Eriksson to the minors and still paying him 4mill+

Man, I don't want to trade Boeser but the more I look at it, the more I realize the Canucks might be able to scrape by this season with little moves here and there but are screwed when Petey/Hughes need new contracts unless they do something big

tbh, the Domi trade is a touch weak, but I wouldn't add too much more.

Also, why is it useless to have both Pesce and Cernak??? They're great defenders and would lock down the right side for a long time

I wouldn’t add a pick from a CAR perspective in a a Pesce-Boeser deal, 1-1 or no deal.

How so? Domi is the best player in that Montreal deal. Pesce is a top 4 RHD locked up to a great contract. Eriksson is a big cap dump but I’m assuming you don’t want to move Hoglander. Would you rather move an unprotected first instead or Demko?

I think this team is farther than most think. I think Bennings goal should be to replace the key pieces that are/will be too old when this team is really ready. Boesser is young and will be a key complimentary piece. Domi would be playing on his 3rd team and is inconsistent. Canucks can keep Boesser and wait for Podkolzin and Hoglander. Between Pettersson, Horvat, Boesser, Miller, Podkolzin and Hoglander the top 6 is set. Save the money and don't resign Taffoli unless he's really cheap.

Key needs are a long term replacement for Tanev. Someone like Cernak would be a great fit. The second for Virtanen can be used to offset the cost of Cernak. Top two would be set.

Left side looks okay with Juolevi and Rathbone.

Would be a mistake to spend money and assets to sign older players that the team would be saddled with when they can be really competitive. Next year will be a gong show in the NHL anyway. Sutter, & Baertchi come off the books next year. My suggestion is to save your powder

That makes sense. So you wouldn’t then sign Tanev/Toffoli/and Markström? The real issue with Eriksson is that second year when EP, Hughes, and Demko (maybe) will want substantial raises. It should be cheaper to move him with one year vs two.

What if Podkolzin and/or Hoglander bust or top out at third liners? Who do you have prospect wise behind them? I think signing Toffoli definitely helps with this risk and it was fun watching him this year with you guys. I also think he would be reasonable on the extension ~5M since he wants to stay on the west coast.

I also think Tanev would be nice for Hughes development but cap may be an issue.

I would sign Tanev if he would do something like $4X2. Markstrom if he signed something like $5.5 X 4 and no expansion protection.

You're right that Podkolzin and/or Hoglander may not pan out. That's why you keep your powder dry. Can never be certain where you will need to add? If you have no cap space or prospects, can make any adjustments.

I think they need find the next partner for Hughes.

I like the Boeser trade. Myers is best suited as a bottom pair D, if they don’t re-sign Tanev, then Myers is currently slated to be the top RD, so a trade has to be made to upgrade that position.

Personally not a fan of the other two trades, but I think the value is pretty close in both of them.

I think Gaudette is rounding into a nice 3C, he’s young and will be a good low cost option for a few years yet. Plus I think he should round into a 20 goal scorer. No issues with trading Virtanen, and overall value seems pretty close.

I honestly think the best thing to do with Eriksson is wait one more year, then offload him at a lower cost when he’s not owed much real money. I’m betting there are going to be a lot of teams that have cap space that aren’t going to take salary on because they’re losing money or barley making a profit (by their standards). Who knows, some teams may want to have the cheapest roster they can. With Eriksson not being owed much but having a large cap hit, may not cost much to move. For now, I would rather see lower cost options moved, Roussel, Beagle, Benn. Also Hoglander’s ECL will be beneficial going forward, need to have some spread out over the next few seasons. Again value seems pretty fair in this trade.
