If Winnipeg sees Domi as a Centre, this is an interesting trade for them.

I think this works for both parties (I am not a fan of Laine being traded out of Winnipeg, but if they did, this would be a worthy package)

Maybe Romanov instead of Fleury and that would finalize it.

With Domi trying to arbitrate his way to UFA in two years or get overpaid on a long term contract this is a no chance by Winnipeg.

And Laine only has one more season on his contract too

Unless Suzuki or KK are coming back, then no. Value is definitely there and actually favours Winnipeg, but most Peg fans don’t want a multiplayer trade like this and favor a simpler 1-1 with small adds to balance from either side. Unless KK or Suzuki are on the block for Laine, don’t bother.

I think this is a slight overpayment by MTL.

-16th overall pick
- Our best prospect (4th in the league not in the NHL)
- Max Domi , top 6 guy who put up 72 pts last season
- Fleury who is projected a top 4 RHD

Regardless, no chance MTL does this. Laine is a great player don’t get me wrong but I can’t see Bergevin giving up those assets.

Caufield has been hyped every step of the way and has proven his worth every time (screw this years WJC That was the worst coaching display ever). Caufield has every bit of ability to score that Laine has, it makes zerrrro sense to trade 3-4 valuable pieces to acquire Laine, keep the pieces and give Caufield a chance.

Would be a massive kick in the balls to trade Laine one for one for the guy selected with the Jets pick in 2017, I'd want more then just Suzuki for Laine.

I agree but my expectations are lower than most. We aren’t getting a massive haul, and if we do it will be for players on expiring deals (Danault, Strome, Domi etc) and a combo of picks and prospects, none of which will be blue chippers. I would rather go a 1-1 with small adds to balance or for a guy like Suzuki who would most definitely fit in well in the 2C spot and is talented enough to play 1C when needed. Ekblad is another option I like. Fills a massive hole on D and would do wonders for our forwards and zone exits. I love Laine but if he can get us that 1B/2 C or a D with top pair potential I do it. Having a bunch of Domi’s or Mete’s/Fleurys isn’t winning is a cup.
I’m not saying the above is 1-1, but all I’m saying is I would take less if it gets us that one target that fills that major hole.

We aren’t taking about MacKinnon, Matthews or Makar here and people tend to overvalue Laine and put him in the same tier. To expect a massive kings ransom return is unrealistic. Yes, he made improvements this year, but he will never be that play driving winger like a Marner or Kane, he is slow and is a streaky goal scorer. Is he still undoubtedly talented with tons of room for growth? Absolutely. But he is still a winger, and they are not as valuable as a top line C or top pairing d. We may luck out and get a blue chipper prospect in return who may develop into one, but with the XD coming up and a flat cap, GMs will be making moves for player protection spots and cap. It may be a Domi/Fleury/picks type of return which would disappoint me more than getting a Dobson or Suzuki with a small add. Guys like that fit our requirements now and for longer than aging UFAs and/or picks that won’t help us for years.

I don't think anyone is putting Laine in the same tier as those guys.
I just don't see those guys as stars like Laine is and really they don't make this team any better, just a lateral move at best, I think Laine's contributions to the Jets success is really really underestimated by a lot of Jets fans.
A team based in Winnipeg should be moving mountains to keep its star.

Trust me, I agree. I would rather see Wheels and PoMo moved before any of our young guys, but I live in the real world and this isn’t EAsports so I have to be realistic and tell myself that A) Wheels and PoMo aren’t going anywhere cause Chevy is loyal to a fault and B) as long as we get a really good centre or defender, I would be ok with that. Teams don’t win cup with a glut of wingers, they need strength down the centre and strong D.
