What I would do

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2020
Published: Sep. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Something on these lines. But everything would have to line up to make this work. Everyone is getting bridge deals and no one is getting offer sheeted.

This version of the team would still be extremely tough to play against.

Thoughts?

But honestly I think other teams will aggressively offer sheet all 3 of these guys that were just bridged and Tampa won't be able to match. So it may be better trading them for assests.

Feel like you’re really low balling Cirelli here. Also why does Johnson waive his no trade to move from Tampa to Buffalo?

Any scenario that "fixes" Tampas cap problems you will get 4000 comments stating problems just like what you just said. I have yet to see one solution to fix Tampa, where a bunch of people didn't say "well that doesn't work" or "why would that person waive". Or I keep the young guys and trade the guys with NTC's. Then when I trade them I get the above comment.

Viscous circle. End of rant haha.

Probably get so many of those comments because it’s a valid point. Maybe if they hadn’t given half their team no trade or no move clauses it wouldn’t be such an issue lol. Think about it, why would a player want to leave a consistent contender in a beautiful place like Tampa, Florida, where there is no state tax, if they have the contractual right to stay? Killorn’s no trade becomes modified this year, so he’s movable. Palat is a year away from his being modified so maybe you get him to waive. Johnson, maybe if you find him a decent spot where he’s promised more ice time, but he’s certainly not going to want to go to a dumpster fire organization like Buffalo has been. Maybe Detroit with the Yzerman connection, but best bet would be in a year he agrees to waive to go to Seattle since he’s from nearby Spokane. Or accept that keeping all three of top RFAs is unlikely and move one for some soon to be ready prospects. Sorry to say but there’s no easy fix to Tampa’s cap crunch

Do you think they would move Palat for so little? From and Avs perspective, I would be all over this trade. I understand that Tampa is in a tough place with the cap. And I understand adding $5.3M will be more of a challenge this offseason than usual, for most teams. But given Palat’s season and especially his playoffs, I would except they could get more for him.

Who knows! Seems like most teams are compressing their budgets massively due to covid. Most teams are setting caps around 70m. (I don't know which ones). So I assume good players with high caps will become a lot less valuable. I think the supply will outweigh the demand and push for smaller returns. I picked the 3 teams in this very specifically to fill needs. NJD needs scoring wingers. Colorado is so well built and could benefit from more high end depth. The Buffalo trade gives Buff a centre which they need and gives Tampa a RHD, which they need.

We will see how much Palat fetches! One thing I just noticed is that Palat only makes 3.445m this year. Which could be enticing! Back to 5.3m next year.

Time will tell!

Those No trade/move clauses are a big reason why they can get guys to sign for less. Obviously the tax breaks make a big difference, but those go away if the player is traded to another state/province. Players want to make sure they don’t get shorted down the road. A quality player on a relatively inexpensive contract would be a pretty coveted trade piece.
I don’t think you can really fault Tampa for doing that, or for being in the position they’re in. The don’t have any monster bad deals and they’ve paid their core guys to stick around. Most of those core guys are players they drafted, many outside of the first round. They did too good of a job at building their team the right way and can no longer afford all those guys. Chicago did the same thing after the 2010 Stanley Cup when they had to move out guys like Byfuglien and Ladd because they couldn’t afford to keep them.
In my opinion, they should mostly target future assets when trading off pieces they can’t afford. Trust their scouting and development staffs to continue to do a great job. They will still have a very good hockey team; and they should be able to pick up a few free agents on short and inexpensive deals to round out their roster, both because of the tax breaks and the opportunity they offer to win a championship. The futures they acquire will become the next wave of inexpensive role players on their first or second contracts who can help their core continue to compete; just like Cirelli, Cernak, and Sergachev now.

I think NJD would considers that. Maybe ask TB give a late 2020 pick back. or something like:

2021 2nd round pick (NYI)
2022 4th round pick (NJD)
...for...
Alex Killorn (at full salary $4.45 million x 3 years)
2020 6th round pick (OTT)

(or TB considers the Sergachev offer....Ty Smith, Nikita Gusev and 1st for Sergachev)

So why does Tyler Johnson waive to go from Tampa's sunshine and Cup contending team to go to.... Buffalo? I don't see it.

Killorn likely has NJ on his 16 team no-trade list too.

You're also lowballing Sergachev.

I had thought I wanted to run by you.
What would be an acceptable cost to add Laine to AVs from Jets?

Or is it inter division that is not realistic??

They would ask for Byram+ probably. And it wouldn't be unreasonable. Laine is one of the top pure goal scorers in the league.

Is there any top6 prospect beyond Newhook that is a C?
That is something the Jets direly too.
