Top-Four D in Tact

Created by: CowSaysMoo
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 14, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
*This plan is contingent on Jonas Brodin signing an extension this offseason*

I believe the only way to solve the 1C/2C debacle is to build through the draft. Rarely do those types of players become available on the trade market and the free agent market. The aspirations of the Wild acquiring Anthony Cirelli, Matthew Barzal, or Aleksander Barkov, are pipe dreams. Teams with proven 1C’s will do anything to keep them. The Wild need to focus on the draft.

There are quality centers in the top 10 that will be available. That is a good starting point. I have the Wild taking Anton Lundell because he will be the one most likely available at pick 9 and he can play with the Wild next year, according to many scouts.

In regards to buyouts, no need for the Wild to force a buyout this year. They will not compete and it’s better to eat a year of the contracts of Dubnyk and Rask. Dubnyk’s contract expires after next year and Rask is a center on a team that doesn’t have many.

This team also has many key RFAs to re-sign after 2020-2021, including Kaprizov and Fiala. No need to spend big money in free agency this offseason nor waste cap space on buyouts.

  1. Frost, Morgan
Additional Details:
The Wild add to the thin pipeline of centers. With Nolan Patrick hopefully coming back, and Couturier and Hayes taking up the top two lines for the foreseeable future, PHI can afford to make a move like this to win now.
PHI
  1. Greenway, Jordan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I see Greenway fitting in well in PHI. The front office knows him very well, and he fits the style the Flyers play.

Absolutely yes from the Wild, I have no idea why Philadelphia does this though.

If all Frost would cost is Greenway, he’d already be wearing a Wild uniform. A player of his potential will cost Brodin or Dumba. Greenway could be used to fill the hole caused by that departure.

I think he means, he doesn't have any idea why Philadelphia would sell Frost (who has high value as a prospect, is expempt from the expansion draft, and under contract until 2022) for a RFA that we cannot afford and would be the 6th best LW on our roster (Giroux, Lindblom, Farabee, Laughton, JVR)... so yeah, explain why we want this deal.

I may have not thought of the expansion draft aspect. My bad, you make a good point. It goes to show how hard it is to not only make decisions in today’s NHL, but also act on it.

I made this trade with the thought in mind of PHI moving JVR. Also, I thought Laughton was a Center?

If JVR is moved, Laughton shifts to C, and Farabee plays his off side, Greenway would work, but the price is still very steep for a bottom six player.

Laughton can play both but it seems like the coaching staff prefers him at wing unless injuries force him to step in. The majority of Laughton's success this year came with him on the left side.

Yeah sending Frost for a bottom six winger isn't a move I can see the Flyers making.Sure Greenway might be a good fit for the way the team plays but that doesn't mean you send your best forward prospect for him only way he is moved is if the trade vastly improves the team and Greenway doesn't do that.

What about a player like Pascal Laberge or German Rubtsov? Are the Flyers still high on both?

I don't think they dislike either player but they don't see them with top 6 potential imo. Rubtsov way have top 6 but he also would be able to play bottom six minutes and be fine before last season started there was belief that he may make the team as a third line wing or 4C. For Laberge he had the injury in Juniors and hasn't seemed to be the same player since which is really sad and he spent most of last season in the coast so there isn't much value there I hope the best for him though.

I have the Wild taking Holtz at 9oa. I think Lundell (BUF) gets taken higher and Holtz is the one to fall out of the top-8.

I also don't think MN does any major moves until the season starts and they see what they have going on with the goalies. Donato, Hunt, or Pateryn might be dumped for picks/prospects. MN is stuck with Dub and Rask.

Can’t go wrong with Holtz either. I don’t think Pateryn plays a game for the Wild next year.

There's a large gap between the expectations for Frost and Rubstov or Laberge. Laberge has never been the same after a bad hit in juniors. I would love to see a team with room in their farm system take a chance on him for AHL action. Rubstov figures to top out as a middle six center, he hasn't looked out of place in limited action but could use a solid campaign to get his NHL hopes on track.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe something around Greenway for Rubtsov could be better for both teams.

No I mean, I read your explanation and still don't know why Philadelphia would do it. The value is clearly in Minnesota's favor.

Is Rubtsov NHL ready? It would make sense to pull in another Russian to speak with Kaprizov, even if it’s just at camp, and depth at C is a plus. This would also make it a lock to get some value for Staal.

I honestly don't know if he is or not. When you see him he definitely looks like an NHLer physically. He may take a bit more time but it also wouldn't shock me if he pushed for a roster spot

I'm hoping that we use the farm system to fill in the open roster spots. I'd love to see Rubstov and Bunnaman take the majority of the reps at 4c as opposed to signing an aging (read bad) UFA like Thompson.
