Dont Sell Low

Created by: KM87
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2020
Published: Sep. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rather than spending big & trading away offensive talent, the Leafs instead hold onto their assets & make small moves. Ceci & Barrie are replaced with Gudas & Lehtonen. Gudas provides a much needed physical presence. Lehtonen is the unknown. The top D-Man in the KHL can hopefully translate his game over to the NHL and become the QB for the 2nd PowerPlay unit.
The Leafs need to find out what they have in Travis Dermott. The 23yr old has been relatively sheltered & protected playing on the 3rd pairing. He is given the QO and top 4 minutes paired with either Reilly or Muzzin. He needs to prove his worth. If he faulters, then Gudas slides up to play with Reilly & Dermott goes back to 3rd pairing with Lehtonen & becomes a trade chip.
The Leafs hold onto Johnsson. Rather than trade him while his stock his low, they place him with Matthews & Nylander to hopefully push up his trade value after a season where he dealt with injuries.
Mikheyev is signed to a multi-year deal and placed with Robertson & Kerfoot.
Kerfoot is kept, much like with Johnsson to hopefully bring up his trade value after a down season.
Wayne Simmonds is brought in on a 1yr show me contract.
Freddie Anderson is kept. No point in selling low on an elite goalie who had a down season. However, his minutes are reduced in order for the Leafs to see what Jack Campbell has. You hope Campbell shows he can handle the work load & Freddie has a bounce back season. If that happens then you sell higher on Freddie at the deadline, or move other pieces & sign him to an extension

9th in Calder voting, Jennings trophy award winner, 4th in vezina voting in 17-18, 10th in Vezina voting in 18-19. Career .917 Save percentage and 2.63GAA. But yeah, definitely not elite. SMH. It's difficult posting on here when everyone is a Leaf hater.

I mean it really depends on the return right? Of course selling low is a dumb move and if the Kappy trade is any indication, Dubas isn’t just selling off assets and at bargain bin pricing. The flat cap isn’t as bad for the Leafs as people are making it out to be. I’m guessing there will be some move other GMs make this off season in order to get out from contracts that don’t fit their internal budgets. I’m expecting a lot of fans scratching their heads.

I agree, good chance he sign it. Sure dubas wouldn’t mind 2 years aat 1-1.25m but this will certainly work better in dermott’s favour next season.

I like the tweeking idea. Trying to boost the value of bubble players in order to trade them at the trade dealine is usually how you get a higher value return. It's pretty basic.

The problem with your lineup is that NONE of those signings will be that low. Holl signed a 2x2 and you think Dermott will take under a million bucks? Pierre Engvall got 1.25 for 2 years and you think Mikheyeve will only take an extra 450k? Wayne Simmons has hit some bumps in the road for sure, but to cut his salary from 5 mil to under 1 millon? This guy still has a resumé, not a chance in hell. Radko Gudas might take that money if you're lucky but he is NOT the top pairing fill-in you're hoping for if Dermott faulters. Oh....and if paired with Rielly, Dermott WILL faulter because theyre both smaller offensive minded D-men. Do you think Dermott is much better defensively than Tyson Barrie or Cody Ceci? Didn't think so...

How... In any universe, is Travis Dermott ready for top pair duties with MR on his wrong side nonetheless?

This is a recipe for an absolute disaster defensively.

I wouldn't say average. He's definitely been above average over his career. Yes man leaf fans are bias but going equally as bias the other way only compounds the issue.

That's Dermott's Qualifying Offer. Interesting perspective on why he would take it here: https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2020/7/20/21324009/99-reasons-why-travis-dermott-should-just-take-his-qualifying-offer-maple-leafs

I'd say very good who had a below average season. No point selling low on him. If I were the Leafs, I'd be quite content to hang on to him. You know what you've got. Tweak the team with someone like Gudas, and see what you've got.

So wishing that my fellow leaf fans don't contribute to needless insults and childish behavior makes me a boomer? Don't be an idiot.

Yup, apart from Gudas, he won't be worth his contract

Yeah, whatever you guys think. I'd take him for 2 x $2, because worst case you leave him exposed for Seattle next year, but other than that, I think you're better off tweaking throughout the season anyway.

Totally agree. All these calls for huge changes is ridiculous. The team is still growing, they are young and need more time under Keefe. I think the core is going to come out hard next season with a chip on their shoulder to prove people wrong. With guys like Dermott, Sandin, Liljegren and Lehtonen, there is a lot of potential for someone to take a step forward and that would simplify everything. I think not giving those guys a chance at all is a mistake.

Agreed. When you look at the best d-cores around the NHL, I'd bet that 75%+ of those are very close to homegrown.

It's so hard to quantify what makes a d core "one of the best". So many great defensive teams have rather pedestrian depth guys but a team system that really works. Like Yannick Weber has never been anything but a bubble NHL player but was very good for a stretch in Nashville. My point is, the Leafs have top end guys on defence in Rielly and Muzzin and then some definite NHL players in Holl and Dermott. Sandin looks like he will be special, Liljegren I think will be really solid and Lehtonen could be really good. Especially if the team actually buys into the system fully.
