It's not because they are rebuilding, they don't need veteran. But if i'm Wings I won't do that

Petry can play close to home without playing in Detroit, i see no real scenario where Yzerman would have any interest in a 33 year old RD we're set at RD and Petry will want at least 4 x 5 in his next deal. Hronek and Seider are already set in our top 4 RD come next season. And we're sure not trading our future #3C in Joe Veleno for a aging Jeff Petry that doesn't fit our rebuild. Petry would've been fine when he was getting dealt from Edmonton. Reportedly Holland had interest in him but our scouts talked him out of it.

If he wants to come back to Detroit he can do it as a FA or demand a trade for cheap. Doesn’t make sense to trade our top center prospect (organization weakness) for Petry.

Might not be a bad idea to get someone who actually wants to play here. Plus you can let seider play 3rd pair and not overwhelm the kids first year.

Yeah i was just thinking that myself, Might nor hurt to put Petry on the top pairing, Hronek on the 2nd pairing, And Mo Seider on the bottom pairing and work him in slowly for his first season.

Can you imagine if Petry does come home, And Krug comes home all of a sudden our blueline isn't all that bad.

Good thing it's not Petrys choice where he gets traded because Bergevin could get a better offer then this

He does have a 15 team NTC so he could be somewhat strategical in that to ensure he went to only a handful of teams.

My guess is that the trade value of Petry (it'd be a sign and trade extension similar to Pacioretty, Stone, etc.) across the league right now after the playoffs he just had is higher than a 1st and two 2nds.

Veleno clearly isn't enough, I could see a trade centered around Petry and Mantha though.

Toronto makes the most sense to me. Gives Toronto that Top 4 RD and allows Petry to be close to Detroit. Win-win

Got news for you he has a 15 team trade list, Pretty sure all western teams are on his no trade list because he wants to be near his Detroit home as much as possible. So there's no guarantee's that the 15 teams he'd agree to waive to would offer Bergiven all that much unless an extension is agreed upon. And if his heart is playing in Detroit then other the Red Wings it's not happening.

Yeah if Petry wants to go home he can sign there as a UFA. Until then, MTL could do a lot better. Just keeping him for one last season and letting him walk would even be better than trading him for Veleno.

"Joe Veleno, C, Grand Rapids-AHL
Jan. 13, 2000 | 6-foot-1 | 194 pounds

Tier: Legit NHL player
Skating: 55
Puck Skills: 60
Physical Game: 50
Hockey Sense: 55

Veleno had a solid first pro season, playing on both special teams for Grand Rapids and putting up 20 points as a teenager. Veleno is a well-rounded player. He can skate and make plays at a pro pace. He’s competitive, playing in the middle third-of the ice often and being responsible defensively. With Veleno, the question with scouts is how much offensive upside he has. I do see NHL offense in him. You see the skill and playmaking pop every so often and he has the skating to pressure NHL defenders. I don’t think you see those aspects consistently enough to say he’s for sure going to be a top-six forward, even if I think that’s possible."

The Athletic has Poehling still ranked higher than Veleno.

Veleno would be his rental price. His price with an extension would be more. If he wants to sign there in UFA, fine, he would be dealt at the deadline for a 1st and a prospect no problem and the Habs move on.

Rebuilding teams don't trade their young C prospects for an aging RD that we don't need, If it's true Petry wants to be close to his Detroit home then deal him to Toronto it's only 230 miles about 3 1/2 hours by car or 45 minutes by plane.
