If Krejci is going to get moved

Created by: staytru20
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2020
Published: Sep. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Note: I don't think the Bruins will actually trade Krejci, especially to another Eastern Conference team, but this could be interesting if it were to happen. This would move Kuznetsov to the wing where his lack of defense isn't as impactful.

but.... why?...

Kuzi doesn't need to be moved to the wing to bring an expiring contract that there's no hope in re-signing?

I think it’s way more likely the bruins move picks to add players than the other way around. He was pretty darn good in the playoffs.

I don't think that this would actually happen at all, but Kuznetsov could definitely play wing for the right player. I don't think it's a bad thing to bring in a "rental" in Krejci for a real "last shot" at the Cup, although the Caps should be fringe contenders for the next three years. Moving Kuznetsov to the wing could free him up from the "defensive responsibilities" of a center and get him to focus on what he does best: scoring.

I think Kuznetsov is underrated defensively, but he's bad at faceoffs, and moving him to the wing will let him score more goals. He played the 2018 playoffs on a 40 goal pace. Moving to wing might let him get closer to that over a regular season. Or just the chance to play Kuznetsov, Backstrom, and Ovechkin together could mean Ovechkin gets twice as many passes and wins another Richard or three.

Krejci and Vrana together could be really, really good. Do you try to extend them both first at 5Mx2 for Krejci and 5Mx8 for Vrana? Or do you let them both play for a contract, together, and take the risk that you then can't afford Krejci the following year, and Vrana ends up steeply overpaid for a long time.

Thanks. Yeah. I think Panik could get back to maybe a 2nd line role in Ottawa and just maybe get back to scoring 30-40 points a year. Then he's still got term under 3M, and the Senators can decide whether to keep him or flip him.

But if the Caps are looking to find a Czech-speaking center to play with Vrana, this board is crawling with Faksa offers. Trade price would be higher, but for the cap hit of Krejci, they could add Faksa and keep Panik, and build a good two-way third line that, while it doesn't get Vrana 80 points this year, helps win a whole lot of hockey games, can develop into a long term scoring line, and can get Panik a 45 point season or two.

Bruins can easily get more back for a top tier 2nd liner who will take less money next year
