This team never learns...
I wonder when GMs are going to learn NOT to hand out 7-8 year deals to guys who are in their late 20s and early 30s. Especially when they have like 5 examples on their roster as it is.

Because odds are if they don’t, someone else will. It’s a sacrifice on the business side of the game GMs have to make to retain a players services. Something I find not a lot of people understand. Doughty’s 8x11 contract isn’t necessarily favourable, but someone certainly would have given him that if he had hit the free agent market. 6M isn’t even that big of a handcuff if he does end up regressing, because odds are the cap will have risen by the time Brodin’s regression comes.

That's different, Doughty and Kopitar are our franchise players and are the only ones who hold those kinds of contracts. Brodin is their 3rd or 4th best dman and when they already have more 3 contracts taking guys to their late 30s and give another guys a similar contract, that is not a smart business move.

Rip trade rumors.

Brodin's NMC makes a Dumba trade 100% sure in the next year. No way Minnesota looses him for nothing at Seattle expansion draft.

Brodin being extended means they can confidently trade one of said other 3 defencemen (likely Dumba) because now they don’t have to worry about Brodin not having a contract passed this season. Suter is a special case because that contract would have expired already had it been with the current CBA. Sure, 4 defencemen at 6M+ isn’t favourable, but in a vacuum Brodin’s contract is more than favourable.

Can we stop arguing and rejoice at the fact that a proposal that no one liked won’t be used on this website again.

Agreed. Neither fanbase liked that trade at all

Two things I hate:

1.) The length that contracts could be signed for under the old CBA
2.) That the new CBA added Recapture penalty for early retirement

Two things that have severely altered the Minnesota Wild's future cap situation. We need Suter and Parise to play at high levels until their contracts expire...which seems unlikely.

My goodness! I didn't see this one coming!

This is actually a pretty good contract. Brodin will be 34 when it ends, and the AAV looks about $1 million less than what he'd fetch on the open market.

I'm surprised this contract is generally looked at positively here, considering how people hated the Spurgeon deal (who is a MUCH better player).

excellent contract, but i still wonder what the wild are trying to do here. he could've brought in a really nice haul and D is a position of strength for them

If there’s anything good to say about it, in the NEW new CBA (that was extended and altered just a month ago), the rules for cap recapture state that the penalty can’t exceed ones AAV of their contract, so if the Wild were to trade one or both of Parise and Suter, there isn’t a potential ~19.5M penalty per player hanging over your head.

I think Suter will be fine so long as he adjusts his game more to that of a DFD, but Parise is a different story. Although, he has been fairly injury prone as of late, so who knows, LTIRetirment could be an option there.

I’m assuming either they’re shopping Dumba as opposed to Brodin, or they’re hoping the haul for Brodin will be bigger with an extension in place.

Yeah I'm hoping that when they do retire, it's due to injury so that we can move those cap hits into LTIR. Otherwise, even the 15ish Mil that would be recaptured would devastate us. Either would need a ton of 35+ contracts or entry level...this will give me anxiety for another 5 years.

Both are future LTIR candidates. Suter is still having problems with his ankle from the surgery he had. You can see he can't pivot as well anymore, so guessing he's got a year or 2 left in him before he's on LTIR. Parise's back issues will be enough to not have the league question too much why he can't play anymore.
