Why would the Sabres do this? They're giving 2 second round picks for a 34 year old rental center + 33 year old bottom pair D man. Also taking on 8m in cap space when cap is a big premium right now.

I might be guilty of lazy trades for the sake of expediency, but BUF needs a 2C and a reliable defenseman, so it works nonetheless.
Stastny knows how to win big games, BUF is missing that ingredient.

Stastny is close to negative value at 6.5M
Both trades are horrible
SJ would probably accept but they don’t have the cap space

Not when you factor in that they need to re-sign Labanc, likely between $3.5-$5M and need to find a much better goalie, minimum $3M. So let's say that's $8M on the high end. They have $14M in cap space. That leaves $6M in space and they still need to have depth players plus have some wiggle room left over... don't see how they have the space to take on $8.25M in cap. Yes I know they can trade other pieces, but they don't really have anything of value to move that they're not stuck with.

Thanks for stopping by.

You realize this trade includes the goalie in it, right? All that’s left after this is Labanc ($3.2 mil or so bridge), a bunch of league minimum moves and a 3rd pairing RD. Thanks for stopping by.

Taking on that much cap should afford Buffalo an asset of real value, and the cost is too high. Stastny has value, but Holden doesn’t. If the trade were for a 5th that would be fair, otherwise Vegas is adding a valued prospect for the financial flexibility.

Sharks take that deal in a heartbeat, Tuch can get his top 6 time and Fleury on a 1a role is amazing news. I don't know if Vegas deals with Sharks though.

No idea why Vegas would do that, but Sharks take that in a second.

The thought of Fleury in SJ is so offensive to me though. Despise the guy.

Random thoughts.
Buffalo could use 2b/3a center
Buffalo could use a #3 LHD
Kim would most likely object to adding $8,200,000 to the cap next year.
If Stastny could do as well next year as this year, he could return a 2nd at the TDL and maybe more.
Athanasiou was traded to Edmonton Oilers for Sam Gagner, round 2 pick in the 2020 draft and round 2 pick in the 2021 draft on Feb 24, 2020.
IMO 2020 and 2021 seconds are too much for Stastny and Holden.

You realize that doesn't include Lebanc who isn't taking another bridge, he just did the team a huge favour and he'll be looking to cash in. & it doesn't include a goalie because you'd still need a back up. Jones should be in the AHL.

Thanks for stopping by. Don't reply.

That's a good assessment of the Sabres' needs, kudos! I think Stastny is a good target as a temporary 2C who Cozens will learn under and replace in 2021-22. I don't know a whole lot about Holden, but we could use a 3LD.

That being said, I don't think those guys are worth 2 2nd round picks. Maybe just the '21 2nd depending on how much value Holden has.

We also have a glaring need at RW, and I could see Buffalo really increasing their offer if the return was Stastny and Tuch.

I qualified at the way tippy top of the thread that the trades were lazy for the sake of expediency. Make them whatever you want, I just find it funny that nobody has anything to say about Petro being in Vegas. Like, not one person mentioned it.

As for SJ dealing with Vegas, I don't think DW or McPhee are the types to refuse a good business deal, especially if it could conjure controversies that drive merch and ticket sales.
