A team with poor centre depth trades it's #1 centre for an inferior, more expensive winger on an expiring deal. Someone explain this please, I don't get it

Doesn’t make a ton of sense for the Sabres either though given Staal’s age and contract and I’m surprised Staal would waive for Buffalo of all places (no disrespect Sabres fans). What a strange deal
