Don't hate the trade but I'd hope for more. Montour isn't as bad as this site believes

If you think this, he is not as good as you think he is. No one is trading for him because they think his arbitration will overpay him. Which it will. He is an absolute liability defensively. Rather have Dermott at the salary he will have.

Like someone else said it’s a high risk high reward scenario due to salary and Seattle. They’ll lose him unless they can work out a trade now or a trade with Seattle not to take him. I don’t see them moving Ristolainen now especially since they have a temporary fix at 2C and they’re definitely not trading Jokiharju.

Montour is a bit better than Dermott and he has a higher ceiling but it’s not drastic. Plus with Sabres cutting their budget, that’s more coming off books

I'd say the same about Montour.

Dermott looked good when he had to step into top 4, looked promising in qualifiers. Also had slow start as he missed training camp and the first chunk of the season with injury

Lol. You can't trade a player for himself.

Dermott >> Montour and it's not even close.

Montour has a higher ceiling than Dermott? Montour is what he is. He is 26 now, entering his prime.

Dermott is solid both ways and I would rather keep him. I don’t have as much hate on montour as most here. The trade seems reasonable value wise. I just think the leafs would regret it.

Even if all this stands to reason, why would the leafs do this trade? Trades and reasoning need to work both ways.

Dmen take awhile to mature and 26 is nothing in this league. Montour was looking like a good top 4 dman all three seasons in Anaheim and had an off year (only his fourth in the NHL). That off year was still better than Dermott. There is no reason to think he can’t return to being a good top 4 option with his skill set.
Dermott is good but I think that ceiling is lower. Good bottom pairing dman, decent top 4.

Right now: Montour > Dermott, ceiling is greater for Montour, but so is the salary implications now and in the future

Because they need right handed dmen? They only have one on the roster? They need someone to play with Muzzin and Reilly. Holl is a bottom pairing dman and should play with Sandin or Lehtonen.

Dermott is good but I think that ceiling is lower. Good bottom pairing dman, decent top 4. Think your personal feelings are getting in the way of reality, at least with his value right now (it’s obviously difficult to determine what a player will or won’t become)

I’m certainly higher on Dermott than most but it has nothing to do with him being a leaf. Just a bad time to trade him. He hasn’t been given a chance to show how good he is. When he has been in the top 4 he has not looked out of place. He can also play both sides.

Also maybe look who he was playing with in Anaheim... I mean Fowler and lindholm are no slouches....
