Retool on the Fly

Team Explanation
Don't worry about the incomplete roster too much, mostly looking at trades and how I can work on saving ARI money.

OEL has already been paid 4M of the 8M he is owed for this season in signing bonuses, however he is still rumored to be on the block. It is pretty close to impossible to save spending this season while moving him out, however his next 3 seasons he is owed 10.5M each so I thought he would be most enticing to other GM's now. I am assuming DeBrusks contract would be back loaded so he will probably be paid about 3.25-3.5M this year. After that Vaakanainen is still and RFA so <1M, and Moore is only owed 2.25M this season. In total they are only really taking on about 1.5M in cap here but spread across multiple roster spots.

I like the Hjalmarsson trade, with his 2M bonus already paid he is only owed 2M, so a 25% retention means Arizona is only paying him 500K. Furthermore, Johnsson is only owed 2.6M this year with his 1M bonus already paid and his contract being front loaded. Again this is technically another trade that doesn't quite save them money but the they are getting younger, getting needed draft capital and his cap hit is still more than his actual pay.

The Kuemper trade is pure cap savings, he is owed 3.5M and they are gaining a center prospect as well as a much needed 1st.

Other trades can also be made with players like:
Grabner - owed 3.775M, cap hit 3.35M
Demers - owed 2.275M, cap hit 3.9375M
Oesterle - owed 1.6M, cap hit 1.4M
Goligoski - owed 4M, cap hit 5.475M

I would keep Stepan, at least until the deadline. He is only owed 2M for the remainder of the season. Also keeping him provides leadership for the young core as well as shelters Hayton on the 3rd line until he's ready for top 6 duty

Deal is fair regardless, you probably won't get him for less. This is based of rumors of Boston being interested in him

It was from Friedman about a week ago on 31 thoughts. Whether you want him or not wont effect managements decision. Him and McAvoy would make one excellent top pair though. Big upgrade on Krug

I think the B’s will find a way to hold on to Debrusk. It seems that they’re big problem is depth scoring, and without him the top 9 is significantly worse. The value is close I just can’t see B’s pulling the trigger, OEL with his cap hit coming off the year he had may scare them away from giving up JDB.

Maybe but I can't see him going for much less. OEl has gone from the most overrated defenseman to the most underrated really fast. He is still very good and would get quite a nice return

Really depends how he plays. He’s an upgrade if he plays like he used to

Wanted to move Grabner and resign Hinny but didn't know who would take him, he's a fairly sizable cap him but still quite an useful player on many accounts. After that I wasn't sure who to put at 4C, there are a lot of options out there resign Richardson/Soderberg, grab someone like Jankowski who is likely to be a UFA, etc. Finally the defense is hard to pin down. with so many pending UFA's I expect a couple to be moved but dont know how to replace them. Probably should have resigned Lyubushkin but oh well.

Do you think the Boston trade is bad? On HF there was a lot of talk about his value in a Boston trade and it was mostly agreed upon to be around this.

Exactly, he hasn't been elite for a while now. If he can bounce back, maybe. Otherwise, his contract will make it look even worse. All-around, he's an upgrade; offensively, no.

I don’t disagree... the top 4 with him would be very solid. I think another team could outbid what the bruins highest offer would be. I just think the B’s are a point in the road where they can’t give up young scorers for older players. I think OEL would be awesome in Boston, but as always in big name trades it’s tough to make each side happy! We’ll see, should be a hectic offseason

The deal is very fair. The rumors were that boston was going to go after him hard in UFA if he got there, not that they would trade for him. They’ve been busy drafting d men instead.

O really like the value Arizona got But it may be a little much for the contract and the fact he’s a big scare Rn

He had 44 points last year, 2 more points than the previous. He's a 40-50 point guy on average. It's only been this this year that was considered down and he still paced 37 points. Also this year and 16/17 are the only years his Corsi dropped below 50%. The 2 years he paced less than 40 points.

Not only talking about his offensive side of the game. His overall game has regressed.

" Price is fair " but if the B's move DeBrusk, it leaves them with no top6 LW on the second line. (Unless they sign someone in free agency). Second thing, you get OEL, you protect him, McAvoy and Carlo. This leaves Grzelcyk exposed for the Seattle draft so they lose him for nothing and if they don't want Seattle to take him, Sweeney would have to pay something (like a prospect or a pick). If it's a pick, already lost the 2021 1st in that OEL trade. Now what, that's two picks we lose? He said it was " painful " to not have a 1st at the 2018 draft. Didn't trade the 1st next year, but got Johansson and Coyle with a 4th, 5th and a 2nd. Had to give up the 1st this year to get rid of Backes' contract (great deal, we even got Kase).

I think the only way he trades a 1st is if he gets an RW with term. He shouldn't for a D or anything else before an RW. Winger is the priority.

Boston has a need for secondary scoring and 5v5 scoring....DeBrusk since joining the league ranks 3rd among B's forwards in 5v5 goals, so trading him doesn't seem to make much sense. Now could they bring someone else in to fill his role? sure, but that won't come cheap so Boston is going to add an $8.5 million hit + probably $5+ million to try and fill DeBrusk hole. It also leaves Boston with 2 years without a having a 1st round picks and Sweeney loves his 1st rounders and typically doesn't like to trade them.

I actually just mocked the trade in a B's ACGM (didn't publish) and just signing their own RFA's an none of their UFA's, they would have roughly $2.9 million in cap space and would've failed to address their lack of 5v5 scoring.

No way B’s can do that. Their middle 6 wings are already a mess. This takes away their best middle 6 wing and the ability to fix the problem as well.

Fair deal for the leafs. No more conditions on picks though. Not sure they would be interested in Johnsson but he could always be moved somewhere for futures and flipped to this trade.

Do you think hjalmarsson would waive?

Never said the value was off. Just said that’s a rough price to pay for a guy that’s about to turn 30 and has 7 years left on his deal. Also a guy that didn’t really look like himself this year imho. Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe it’s regression. Maybe Boston hits a home run. Maybe it ends up looking bad. Urho is gonna be a stud so I know where I’d put my money

Conditions still exist, they only got rid of resign conditions which is not used in this trade. As I stated in the description Johnsson is only owed 2.6M this season, furthermore he is only owed 2.5M in the last 2 years since his contract was front loaded

I was under the impression that performance based conditions were removed as well but I could be wrong.

Johnsson is certainly a good fit for money owed. My issue was whether a team just starting a rebuild would want a player with 3 years left over futures.

As the title says its a retool on the fly, the Idea is to be competing again with the young core in a matter of 2 years or so
