Description
Don't worry about the incomplete roster too much, mostly looking at trades and how I can work on saving ARI money.

OEL has already been paid 4M of the 8M he is owed for this season in signing bonuses, however he is still rumored to be on the block. It is pretty close to impossible to save spending this season while moving him out, however his next 3 seasons he is owed 10.5M each so I thought he would be most enticing to other GM's now. I am assuming DeBrusks contract would be back loaded so he will probably be paid about 3.25-3.5M this year. After that Vaakanainen is still and RFA so <1M, and Moore is only owed 2.25M this season. In total they are only really taking on about 1.5M in cap here but spread across multiple roster spots.

I like the Hjalmarsson trade, with his 2M bonus already paid he is only owed 2M, so a 25% retention means Arizona is only paying him 500K. Furthermore, Johnsson is only owed 2.6M this year with his 1M bonus already paid and his contract being front loaded. Again this is technically another trade that doesn't quite save them money but the they are getting younger, getting needed draft capital and his cap hit is still more than his actual pay.

The Kuemper trade is pure cap savings, he is owed 3.5M and they are gaining a center prospect as well as a much needed 1st.

Other trades can also be made with players like:
Grabner - owed 3.775M, cap hit 3.35M
Demers - owed 2.275M, cap hit 3.9375M
Oesterle - owed 1.6M, cap hit 1.4M
Goligoski - owed 4M, cap hit 5.475M

I would keep Stepan, at least until the deadline. He is only owed 2M for the remainder of the season. Also keeping him provides leadership for the young core as well as shelters Hayton on the 3rd line until he's ready for top 6 duty

Not only talking about his offensive side of the game. His overall game has regressed.

" Price is fair " but if the B's move DeBrusk, it leaves them with no top6 LW on the second line. (Unless they sign someone in free agency). Second thing, you get OEL, you protect him, McAvoy and Carlo. This leaves Grzelcyk exposed for the Seattle draft so they lose him for nothing and if they don't want Seattle to take him, Sweeney would have to pay something (like a prospect or a pick). If it's a pick, already lost the 2021 1st in that OEL trade. Now what, that's two picks we lose? He said it was " painful " to not have a 1st at the 2018 draft. Didn't trade the 1st next year, but got Johansson and Coyle with a 4th, 5th and a 2nd. Had to give up the 1st this year to get rid of Backes' contract (great deal, we even got Kase).

I think the only way he trades a 1st is if he gets an RW with term. He shouldn't for a D or anything else before an RW. Winger is the priority.

Btw, according to Kevin Allen (former writer of USA Today, but left and started freelancing in December) the Bruins are shopping DeBrusk. He postex it on Hockeybuzz so that that how you will but despite the site he is a significantly more reliable source than Eklund.
