Unless the Leafs make a trade, IMO Carrick makes the top three Dmen for expansion purposes. Holland? Hunwick? can't see them with the Leafs next year.

I Understand what you mean with Carrick but personally i think Marincin will play him out and get that last protection spot. The reason both of them were signed to 2 year deals is because the leafs understand that one must be exposed, and this year they must show management what they got and fight it out for that last Protection spot on the defence. Hunwick is simply there if there is an injury in the top 4, or if Valiev or Mayfield cannot handle their role quite yet, he can step in. Its simply a one year deal, nothing major and he would be the only one on defence who is a true veteran (cant have a completely young blue line). Holland is kept because he can play anywhere throughout the lineup on any line, and any position. The other UFA's look grim and they need a 13-14th forward who can center. I would say keep Leipisic but again they would need another center and i dont see anything special in Leipisic (guys like him are a dime a dozen and Sosh,Hyman,Rychel,Brown can fill these holes better).

If Marincin does well I could see Leafs protecting 4 defenseman, and protect JVR Kadri Connor Brown and 1 of Martin or Komarov

Actually I can see that Leafs make a trade for another Dman and protect 5 yes 5 Dmen at the trade. Just three forwards protected Kadri, JVR and Brown. Since Komarov has just one year left on his contract I don't think he will be taken. Martin might be taken as he cap hit would be 2.5rm for three years, and since the Leafs front loaded his contract, his actual salary is much lower than 2.5m average. Of course Martin (or whoever) has to play decent this year to be drafted. Leivo and Bibeau are other candidates to be drafted IMO.

You know what, that's not a crazy idea, we have so many forward options that to lose one wouldn't have much effect but if we can retain as much defensive skill as possible, if we can have a solid defensive core and goaltending it would help our young forward core
