Budget Season

Created by: bonkey
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2020
Published: Sep. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
DRAFT: (Using draftprospectshockey.com Draft Simulator)
1. Alexis Lafreniere
2. Quinton Byfield
3. Tim Stuztle
4. Cole Perfetti
5. Jamie Drysdale
6. Marco Rossi
7. Lucas Raymond

8. Alexander Holtz: The Swedish winger has an elite shot and it was on display in the SHL last year as he netted 9 goals as a draft eligible. The skilled forward would be returned to the SHL after the draft and would play one more season overseas. The plan would be for him to make the jump to the NHL or the AHL after that season.

38. Jean-Luc Foudy: The speedy center had a disappointing Draft Season in the OHL last season. However, there is still a tremendous amount of upside with this player due to his world class speed. The plan for him would most likely be for him to play two more seasons in the OHL and then make the jump to pro hockey.

99. Tristen Robins: The center has an electric second half of the year in Saskatoon. If his season wasn't cut short due to the Corona Virus, he would probably be drafted higher. The plan for his development would be 2 more years in the WHL and then the jump to pro hockey hopefully.

130. Jacob Dion: The left handed defender had a good season for the Drummondville Voltiguers. While he is small for a defenseman, he does provide a somewhat high ceiling offensively. The plan for him with his development would be 2 years in the QMJHL and then see about offering him an entry level deal.

192. Gage Goncalves: The center for the Everett Silvertips had a great season after going undrafted last year. However, if he was a drafted prospect last year, his D+1 season would be seen as a major success. Gage would need to improve in his next season to warrant an entry level deal.

215. Tobias Handl: The big Czech center played the season in the Czech pro league, however, there were times that you could tell that he was only 17. This is a dart throw and with him being an international player, there are four years until the decision of entry deal or not.

RFA Signings:

23. Sam Reinhart: The winger signs a 6 year deal worth $39,000,000. This deal would be back loaded to help offset the blow no fans will have on the the teams margins. He would receive a salary of $4,000,000 in the 2020 season, however that additional $2,500,000 would be distrubeted across the final 5 years of the deal. This would make his salary for the final 5 years of the contract $7,000,000.

68. Victor Olofsson: Olofsson signs a deal that would keep him in Buffalo for the next four seasons. He would receive a salary of $3,000,000 with the additional $1,500,000 being spread out over the deal. His salary for the season after 2020-21 would be $5,000,000.

95. Dominik Kahun: Kahun had a good start to his career in Buffalo before the Corona Virus ended his season. His salary would remain $2,700,000 throughout the duration of his contract.

27. Cutis Lazar: Lazar enjoyed a bounce back year in the NHL and proved to be a solid depth player. Lazar gets a $150,000 raise and a good look at the NHL roster next season.

72. Tage Thompson: The big winger who was the marquee piece of the O'Reilly disaster caught a tough break this season. After having a hot start in the AHL, the winger got called up and injured his shoulder ending his season. This is a make it or break it season for Thompson.

37. Casey Mittelstadt: The center struggled the last season. He is a 10.2 Free Agent, which means he cannot be offersheeted. He would sign a 1 year deal $850,000 and would start the season in the AHL.

35. Linus Ullamrk: The goalie was having a successful season before he got hurt. He would be signed to a three year contract. His salary for 2020-21 would be $2,000,000 with the extra $850,000 getting spread out over the duration of the contract.

TRADES:
1. Arizona Trade: Arizona is looking to dump cap due to the less than desirable cap situation the are in right now. The 2 players Buffalo acquires are Derek Stepan and Anntii Raanta. While the cap hit for these 2 players is $10,750,000, their combined salary is $4,000,000. The compensation going back to Arizona is a 2021 2nd Round pick, a conditional 2021 4th, and prospect Lukas Rousek.

2. St. Louis Trade: The Blues want to resign Alex Pietrangelo and in this world we assume that they do. Vince Dunn would be the consequence of that resigning due to the contracts they already have on the blue line and the looming expansion draft (only 3 Defenseman Protected; Pietrangelo, Parayko, Faulk). Buffalo would give up the rights to Lawrence Pilut, a defender with upside, Mattias Samuelsson, a prospect defenseman who has a low ceiling but high floor, and a 2022 3rd round pick. Dunn gets a 3 year deal with the same salary throughout the length of the contract.

3. Pittsburgh Trade: The Sabres give a lot to Penguins here in exchange for Jared McCann. They give up Brandon Montour, a offensive defenseman with upside in transition, Marcus Davidsson, a center prospect with bottom 6 upside, a 2022 4th round pick, and Carter Hutton with $1,250,000 retained. The reason the Penguins would do this is because they will need a backup goalie after trading Matt Murray and they could use help on the blue line. McCann would sign a 3 year deal with a salary of $2,850,000 throughout the contract.

Don't hate the deal but Pittsburgh has a backup, Hutton isn't really an upgrade on DeSmith

Can't see the Coyotes trading low cash / high cap contracts unless you are paying way more then that. This year a trade like that will cost a first plus a good prospect at least maybe even more. Low actual cash deals will be key for teams in a year with low ticket sale revenue league wide

They have 1 million in space and they have to resign Taylor Hall. They should be trading as much cap as possible. Both players are on 1 year deals on bloated salary cap deals. A 2nd, 4th and a prospect is pretty fair value.

What makes you think Hall will resign there. Hall was a rental they don't have the cash capital to resign him

The Blues could get a fair bit more than that for Dunn. As much as he may be a cap casualty, there will be a lot of teams interested if he's available.

In addition he would be one of the three protected if they resign Petro not Faulk. Secondly I think Dunn will he signed before Petro anyway, but the money is there for everyone especially if they can move Bozak

6.5M for a 3rd line center is nuts...if that's the case I'd spend a good portion of that 6.5 on a 2RW.
