Leafs sign Petro and trade Nylander

Created by: B_Leaf
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2020
Published: Sep. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Whether Buffalo is interested or not, the idea is you make Nylander available for a top 10 pick, depending on where a team bites you can add or subtract additional picks to make up value.
With the bottom six the Leafs could also try to rebuild with economical UFA signings.
The Leafs D is vastly improved, and the system gets a huge boost with two top fifteen picks.

- very good draft to the top 10
- cap

except that you literally hope any player pick turns into a player as good as Nylander because that's the best case scenario. A guy who can score 30 goals now vs a guy who might not even be in the NHL for 2-3 years is an easy call

You need to read carefully. We don't have a cap and money for Nylander. I only see a scenario of this kind of trading if we are trading Reinhart on another trade. I didn't say that I didn't like Nylander or anything like that.

Buffalo literally has almost 35 million in cap space. they have the 3rd most cap space in the league (like 100k'ish behind the wings) they have more than enough money to trade for Nylander, and no they are not hands tied because of RFA deals or anything.

We need to extend Reinhart, Olofsson, Ullmark, Montour, Mittelstadt, Thompson, Lazar find 3-4 players for bottom 6 and preferably good ones, find another LD. Also, in theory, we should meet the requirement of the 70 million inner cap. Try to do all this and add Nylander there, you are unlikely to succeed.

i think it's really easy to look at that list of players and say "hmmm, should we not trade for william nylander because of one of these guys?" and then make the call, but ok. sure. Lazar, Mittelstadt and Montour it is!

I think you need to read it carefully again.

Reinhart - 6-7 M
Olofsson - 3,5 - 4, 5M
Kahun - 2 - 3 M
Ullmark - 2 - 3 M
Montour 3 - 4 M
Mittelstadt, Thompson, Lazar - this cheap deals 800 - 1, 200 M

- Need LD
- Need goalie instead of Hutton
- Need good defensive 3C
- Maybe need cheap top 9 RW

I think you need to read more carefully. If you would rather have a combination of Lazar, Montour and Mittlestat over Nylander, well, you do you. That's some bad roster building.

No, I do not prefer this combination, I prefer Nylander, but we still will not fit into the inner cap, even if we trade Montour for futures, Mittelstad and Lazar are just cheap players who can fill the squad, they do not affect this situation in any way.

I'll preface this by saying that Nylander is a very good hockey player, but I don't think I'd take this deal.

Like others have said, this probably doesn't work with our rumored internal cap without finding a way to move other players. And yes, Nylander is better than a lot of the guys we have to re-sign. But depth is important, we are already a little top-heavy with Eichel, Skinner, and soon Reinhart, and I don't think Nylander adds anything that Skinner and Reinhart don't already. You could even say the same with Olofsson.

He just isn't that exciting of a trade target to me, because he really isn't what this team needs. We need a tenacious, hard on the boards, good down low type top 6 forward, we have plenty of perimeter playmakers already. Realistically bringing in Nylander means we're probably trading Reinhart, and I don't see that as anything more than a lateral move.

And to add to that, I think the Sabres are very much done with the Nylander name for a while.
