2021-2022 Post-Expansion Roster

Created by: ML16
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2020
Published: Sep. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Targeting teams with cap issues / 5M+ on LTIR to take advantage of the Habs owner’s deep pockets in the current economic context, namely Tampa (Killorn), Tampa (Kesler/Comtois) and Winnipeg (Little/Vesalainen+).

In the end, a competitive roster centered around a young offensive corps and an experienced backend with 12M in cap space for 2022-2023 with only Suzuki, Romanov and Primeau needing a new contract, since Chiarot is likely to be replaced by upcoming Norlinder. Luxury bottom/middle-6 wingers Byron/Armia can also be dealt for some cap flexibility if need be. They could also be offered to Seattle in the expansion draft (Byron would likely required pick(s) incentive, Armia not so much.) If neither Byron nor Armia are chosen by Seattle, the Habs likely lose on of Mete/Chiarot/Juulsen/Fleury instead, a manageable loss considering the depth of MTL’s D prospect pool.

Also, the roster is built in the spirit of rolling 4 lines, with a mix of size, skills and grit on each. And with 4 top-50 picks in the 2020 draft (including 2 top-16 picks) it is likely that the Habs can add 1 or 2 impactful prospect(s) into that mix.

1.
ANA
  1. Struble, Jayden [Reserve List]
  2. 2020 4th round pick (ANA)
  3. 2021 4th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Assuming Anaheim does not want to pay 13M+ for Kesler and Perry’s cap recapture penalty in 2020-2021. The price for taking on Kesler’s last 2 years of contract would be a trade of prospect LW vs LD and 2 mid round picks, since Anaheim doesn’t get effective cap relief in the short term.
2.
MTL
  1. Little, Bryan
  2. Vesalainen, Kristian
  3. 2020 1st round pick (WPG)
WPG
  1. Domi, Max [RFA Rights]
  2. Fairbrother, Gianni [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Assuming Little’s career is unfortunately over and that Winnipeg thus needs a viable option for C behind Scheifele. For taking on Little’s 5,3M until 2024 and filling the void with a better player around the same cap impact - Domi - a Winnipeg’s 1st round pick and Vesaleinen seems fair. MTL throws in one of his numerous LD prospect to sweeten the deal.
3.
TBL
  1. Poehling, Ryan
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Tampa gets much needed cap relief to sign At least one of Cirelli/Segachev for futures. MTL fills a need for an experienced LW to balance its lines.

Keslers contract is at least 80% insured, no reason for the Ducks to even consider that

Kesler has already stated that he's not waiving his NMC, He'll just stay on LTIR in Anaheim until his contract is up. Besides Montreal doesn't need cap relief from his LTIR doubt Bergevin spends up to the cap with a flat cap for the next several seasons.

Why wouldn't the Jets just put Little on LTIR?
I assume insurance pays out the contract.

Yeah if little can go on LTIR, I don’t know why they would include him in a deal to lower his overall value.

Yup. Not sure why everyone still thinks that this is like a handful of years ago when someone like Nathan Horton's contract wasn't insured, hence Columbus taking Clarkson for him. Couldn't afford to pay Horton not to play, so swapped him with the Leafs. Now? Contracts are insured.

Ducks have no reason to do this. Comtois isn’t for sale and Kesler’s cap doesn’t affect us
