A contract would need to be going back in the philly deal to make the money work and until where is any certainty on Patrick I don't think Frost is going to be moved

If I'm Dubas I take this deal and let the players figure it out.
Their blueline is just that terrible, you should collect talent whenever you can regardless of their handedness

Underwhelming return for Johnny. There isn't a guaranteed quality NHLer in the bunch.

How is that an underwhelming return.... especially when you get the cap space in this situation to sign Hall to replace JG.

An NCAA player that may not sign, a B+ prospect, and a mid-late 1st for two years of Johnny is less than Taylor Hall/Max Paciorretty got on expiring deals as older players. Granted Hall and Paciorretty impact the game in different ways, the expiring contract element is significant, and neither has produced at the same clip as Johnny throughout his career. Johhny's contract is stellar and his on ice impacts have exceeded his cost significantly over this contract.

So in the scenario presented, why wouldn't they just bypass CGY and go for RD Dumba?

@claytron8000 what are the odds that Treliving would want to move Lindholm instead of one of his two central stars (Gaudreau/Monahan)? What would the ask be?

Pretty low to be honest. I think they will look at anything, but his age, contractual status, and handedness are in short supply in Calgary. I think they see him moving to center on the top line. Other guys that I think they would entertain would be Backlund who is quite underrated, Bennett but a team would be buying high on a playoff performance, and Ryan who is a Peters guy nearing the end of his deal.

The betting man in me thinks Monahan is the body that moves this offseason before his NTC kicks in. Johnny gets another year to rebuild his value and moves next summer before his NTC kicks in. If he has a bounce back year I don't think an extension is out of the question even if it's not the most probable outcome.

As a CBJ fan, I know Ryan and Bennett aren't what we're looking for, and Backlund would only fit if the price is not terribly high in return, given his age. Lindholm would be a perfect fit with us. Monahan's defensive reputation might be an issue with Torts, but I think he'd make it work if we didn't have to sell the farm to get Monny.

Backlund is still a real 2C. His offense is at the lower end of the 2C band but his defense leaves his gf/ga differentials all well within good 2C territory. Monahan is a bad 1C though. I don't want to see Backlund traded but I think CBJ is a good fit if it happened.

I can see a fit for Monahan in Columbus, but like in Calgary, you'd have no choice but to play him with Bjorkstrand. Lindholm is used as the defensive presence on the top line in Calgary, but he's just okay truth be told and Gaudreau is really driving the bus on the top line (despite a poor season). The media boosting of Lindholm's defensive presence doesn't show up in the data. Monahan is bolted to Gaudreau because he's not the creator on his own. Hence I could see Bjorkstrand with Monahan. Maybe Dubois Monahan Bjorkstrand? That's very similar to the Flames top line with better puck retrieval out of Dubois.

We're not shifting PLD to the wing, that's for sure. I'd expect something more along the lines of Texier-Dubois-Atkinson on the top line and Foudy-Monahan-Bjorkstrand on line 2.

I was looking at faceoffs taken and it looks like PLD already spends some time there? Either way I think you need a guy like Bjorkstrand for Monahan. No way around it.

He's in the bottom of his 1st round draft class breaking into the league and didnt set the world on fire in the AHL. You can't give everyone an A in a curved system.
