Going to take far more then a late 2nd and 3rd round pick for Detroit to retain $2m on Phil Kessel for the next 2 years.

FWIW Detroit moving Zetterberg and retaining $2m on Phil Kessel is going to cost you far more then a late 2nd and 3rd round pick. Zetterberg cost us nothing on LTIR and gives us about $40.5m in cap space plus he only costs us $1m in real money.

Agree with the others, not trading zetteberg no matter what and it costs you this year's 2nd(tor) and a good prospect to retain that

After Kessel's summer bonus, he's only owed 7M more on his contract, so Detroit's share comes to $1.75M (edit, that's total, over both years).

Some team would take that.

But I also took Zetterberg's contract. He's only owed 1M salary this year, and I don't know whether it's partly insured or not, but that opens up cap space for Detroit to take on other LTIR contracts for more draft picks, this summer. Since both are things Detroit fans on here are talking about, I figured that could have significant value as a sweetener.

Zetterberg doesn't cost Detroit any cap space. They can get it all back if needed. So taking Zetterberg's contract doesn't help or hurt The Wings. So Detroit giving up anything to take Z's contract isn't going to happen.

Sorry I mentioned Zetterberg. He is all yours.

A 2nd and a decent prospect seems like a very fair price. Doesn't have a to be a 2nd and a 3rd. Can't promise Toronto's 2020 2nd since in real life Toronto still owns that. Could try to make this a four team trade, but I'm not sure Toronto wants to help Washington get Kessel.

The Kessel trade can't happen with retained salary because Toronto and Pittsburgh are already retaining on Kessel's contract.

Darn. I knew Toronto were, and I knew the rule. No idea Pittsburgh were retaining on him. That's really gonna lower his trade value. Thanks for being willing to theoretically help, though!

I guess it could still happen, but WSH would have to unload Eller, too. Maybe Minnesota or Buffalo could be interested, but I like Eller, and I'm not sure how they'd replace him.
