have to overpay a bit to not get crucified by leafs fans, which it appears is still happening anyways

Where is the overpay? Leafs give up 3 roster players for two and nylander is by far the most valuable piece in the deal.

Leafs fans are always criticized for offering spare parts for good players. This is spare parts (yes sadd is good) for a great player a good player and a Dman with great potential.

Leafs get back an older winger an okay top 4 Dman and a 1st. That is not very good asset management. Especially if you are looking to pry nylander free. He is not a player the leafs will move.

Dermott is 23 with the potential to be a top 4 Dman, and his defense first playstyle would be great alongside either of boqvist or mitchell in the future

Aren’t the leafs looking for a defense first top four d?
If actually think that’s what he will be then why does nearly every leafs fan send him packing? I don’t think he carries near the value might be hoping for.

Boqvist and Mitchell will get more and more minutes as they develop. The only thing missing from the hawks defensive prospect pool is a #1 LD, and trading or keeping Murphy doesn't change that

I don't think trading or keeping Murphy is the issue. I think the issue is trading a 1st rounder to get better now, when you still have one of the worst defenses in the league. It reeks of desperation rather than patience, which should be the way to go

Murphy is literally a top 4 RHD, this is honestly too good of a deal for them.

I would LOVE to see the Leafs do this deal and NOT get Pietro! It would be HILARIOUS!! Just HILARIOUS! tears of joy

looking at his stats now they are actually pretty good. Besides special teams he is actually decent. This wouldn't actually be a horrible return for Nylander.

Yes it would.... well maybe not horrible but certainly not anything that would persuade dubas to consider moving him.

Because leafs fans are dumb!

They assume every team has at least 3 right shot d in their line up. Here’s the great part... Dermott can play the right side very well. Moving him now would be wasteful.

I’d do this if I was dubas but feel like Toronto could still get a more enticing package for Nylander from another team

He would not extend for less money than he currently makes. So no, that’s not happening.

Just think for a moment of all the players and packages that have been offered for nylander is this the one that changes dubas’ mind?

The hawks have so many D prospects and Nylander is still very young. It's not like we're trading the pick for a rental

I don't think I'm doing to convince you on this, so it seems pointless. I still hold the belief that Chicago should keep as many picks, and trade as many aging players as they can, before trading for instant improvement.

If I could I would have given that comment 17 likes just to match the importance of that pick. Well said

And I think that's a motivation to do things my way, rather than yours. You're not getting rid of that Seabrook contract, and I don't think Keith can be expected to pull a Chara after he's at least been trending down over time. I, personally, would look to trade both Kane and Toews as well.

Agreed. AJ plays 86% of the time with Matthews and statistically the 4th most assisted player in the entire NHL despite pretty poor stats. He got a $3.4M contract for 3 more years. Those are all facts. That add up to he's a pure cap dump that will be replaced by an ELC that'll perform better than AJ.

Bingo! Hawks want NOTHING to do with Johnsson...ZERO. This trade is not good because of Johnsson, he would bring negative value to the Hawks. Where does he fit in when you have a top 6 of Debrincat, Kubalik, Kane, and Nylander (or saad)? Then we have 3rd line wingers in A Nylander, Shaw, Suter, Hagel, Kurashev. If Shaw plays (likely), then you literally are pushing out all our young guys to play Johnsson which is terrible cap management.

With Carlsson, Beaudin, Vlasic, Kazynuk why would we bring in Dermott who's ceiling is top 4 but is a 3rd liner today?

The trade would need to be Murphy and the 1st rounder for Nylander or Murphy and Saad for Nylander.

Leafs fans will tell you you're crazy if you offer Murphy+17th OA for Nylander even though it's a deal that benefits both sides a lot. Murphy+Saad dosn't make much sense because the leafs need to cut salary but Murphy+17th OA does make sense to every non leafs fan
