Leafs cant afford Pietrangelo Read description

Created by: BradDillon17
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 19, 2020
Published: Sep. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Without moving Nylander/Marner. Don’t know how many times this needs to be said. Even if icing players at minimum contracts the math doesn’t work and the team as a whole is a lot worse

Trading Anderson is an easy solution and very realistic at that. But i agree the team would be worse with this depth.

Yeah basically. You have to sacrifice something big to make it work

Problem is you’d be downgrading in net, wouldn’t find an equivalent at less than $5 million

No they cannot. The math is right in front of you.

You’d have to gut the entire rest of the team

Kerfoot engvall and Johnsson is not gutting the team it’s discarding replaceable players lol, personally I’d move Marner and upgrade the bottom 6 but this way works too (edit you could also move Holl assuming pietro wants more than 8.5)

I mean, just send Korshkov back to the A. We ran a 21 man roster and even 20 all of last year. Tada

It is when you are replacing them with players on minimum contracts..

Good luck with that in a pandemic and condensed schedule

Don't see how that makes things any harder than it already is. Need a replacement? just call someone up

Honestly the assets gained from trading Willy PLUS Pietrangelo makes it worth it for me if that's what needs to be done

Bars above may be better than Johnsson (I doubt he’s worse) Simmonds is equivalent to engvall at this point (I prefer his game style tho) and Rodrigues is no doubt a downgrade but I’d say it’s well worth it (especially cause Kerfoot didn’t exactly wow), and Holl is nothing special either, Liljegren would be a more exciting player to see and again I doubt he’d be worse

They won’t be able to unless someone is on IR. If two players go down in the same game and can’t be placed on IR they’d be forced to play with one less forward or defenseman

Barabonov is not close to Johnsson, Engvall is better than Simmonds by quite a bit now, Rodrigues is a significant downgrade from Kerfoot, Liljegren isn’t ready yet

On a roster of 21 you can always make it work. Look at this year. Leafs had all sorts of injury trouble, including the scenario you propose and it never stopped us from having a full lineup. not even once. The fear is overblown.

Because you weren’t mere dollars away from the cap like they would be now. It always allowed for a move if need be + players like Johnsson going on IR helped them

The Leafs were $13 million dollars over the cap last year... Relax. In Pridham we trust.

Johnsson has not impressed me at all, a meh third liner at best which I think is what barabanov will be maybe a bit better, engvall had about 10 good games in the NHL other than that he was awful (and I was really excited for him, thought he could be good), and Liljegren is very close and like I said I’d like to see him get a real chance and I doubt he will be worse than Holl who imo is a 7th d on a good team

Lol. I am very aware of how it works, this entire thread you've created shows an incomplete understanding of the Leafs ability to navigate around the limitations. I am telling you, the leafs will be fine

I guess we’ll have to wait and see but at this point, unless one of the big four is moved, they aren’t getting Pietrangelo..

At least at that price. They’ll have to ice nearly an entire bottom six of league minimum players. Unless he breaks in in the middle of the night and takes Nylander’s knee out so he has to go on LTIR it won’t happen unless him or Marner are moved
