A Path to Pietro 2

Created by: jking7
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 19, 2020
Published: Sep. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Disregard the return on the trades, this was just to see what the roster would look like if the Leafs signed Pietrangelo. Technically it would work if you're willing to downgrade in goal or 3rd line center. Obviously it is not ideal to carry a roster of 20, but it is within the rules to do so, and the Leafs proved they were willing to do it this season. The picks also help restock what are rather barren prospect cupboards.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (CBJ)
LAK
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
Additional Details:
I'm not worried about where I'm sending AJ. He'll be worth a 3rd rounder to someone, somewhere.
2.
TOR
  1. 2020 4th round pick (OTT)
OTT
  1. Engvall, Pierre
Additional Details:
Again, not worried about where he's going. Probably worth a late 3rd, or early 4th.
3.
TOR
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (DAL)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (OTT)
OTT
  1. Andersen, Frederik
Additional Details:
Melnyk is one of the cheapest owners in the league. Ottawa needs a starting goaltender that can make them at least LOOK competitive. Andersen may have a 5 mill AAV, but his actually salary is only 1 million. If Jake Allen (4.35/1 yr) is worth a 3rd, Andersen is easily worth a 2nd and a 3rd given his remaining salary.
4.
TOR
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (DET)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (SJS)
DET
  1. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]

Looking at next year's summer illustrates why this doesn't seem to be a good idea. There's still some fundamental challenges that this team doesn't seem overly equipped for, and re-signing FA's in 2021 would be a huge challenge.

Sure this is the path to Pietro, but really why would the Leafs want to take that path? Downgrade at goalie, downgrade left wing, downgrade at right wing. And no teams go with 20 man rosters, and even 21 don't work either. What is the fascination with having an expensive RHD at the cost of multiple other positions?

while it is true melnyk is cheap, not trading for Andersen actually saves him even more money

Hyman and Mikheyev would be the only notable 2021-22 UFAs. Barabanov, Lehtonen and Spezza would also be up, but that likely won't be much of a concern.

They aren't getting a reasonable starter for less than 1 million.

Yes, but theres just over 8 million in cap space and 13 signed, to have a 23 man roster all players signed on that offseason would have to be paid below league minimum.

2 3s for dermott is a bit rich and I'm a fan of the guy. Maybe a 3 in 2020 and a 4 or 5 in 2021

and those picks are right next to each other. There is no way Detroit does that.
